The Joaquin junior high Rams continued their quest for the junior high league title as they remained undefeated in District 19-1A play with a 14-6 victory over the Timpson Bears at Ram Stadium last Thursday night.

According to Joaquin Coach Scott Owens, the contest was very physical, with first downs coming at a premium.

Just before halftime, Joaquin scored first on a 3-yard run by Gage Belrose. This touchdown was set up by a pass to Keith Fergusen. The Rams led at the half, 8-0.

A determined Timpson offense kept the Rams on their collective heels in the third quarter as the bears drove 70 yards to hit paydirt. The 2-point conversion attempt failed, leaving Joaquin clinging to an 8-6 lead.

Joaquin received the ensuing kickoff with 1:30 on the third-quarter clock and 65 yards away from extending its lead. The Rams mounted a time-consuming drive that erased all the time off the game clock except 25 seconds to increase the lead to the 14-6 final. Armando Robles scored the touchdown and the Rams remained unbeaten against district competition.

Lance Lawson completed 3-of-4 passes for Joaquin for 70 yards, a touchdown and a two-point conversion.

Coach Owens credited his squad with an outstanding effort, playing against a Timpson team which had an offensive line that averaged about 230 pounds. He said the Ram defense played with great determination all night long.

In the 7th grade scrimmage, the teams battled to a 2-2 tie.

Joaquin is scheduled to travel to Waskom Thursday night. The 7th grade scrimmage is set to begin at 5 p.m., with the 8th grade to follow.
