NACOGDOCHES -- There's one thing for sure, Shelby County high school bands know their stuff; their performances Saturday proved it.
All five county high schools were well represented Saturday at the University Interscholastic League Region XXI Marching Contest here at Stephen F. Austin's Homer Bryce Stadium, and they were among the best at the competition as they were among the 40 which competed in Class 1A-5A.
Center, Tenaha, Timpson, Shelbyville and Joaquin bands all received overall No.1 ratings at the competition among seven Class 1A schools, nine Class 2A schools and 14 Class 3A schools.
The Center band is directed by Chris Smith, the Tenaha band is directed by Rhonda Cates, the Timpson band is directed by Tim Hunger, the Joaquin band is directed by Lynn Cooper and the Shelbyville band is directed by Larry Edge.
There were also seven Class 4A bands and three Class 5A bands which performed during the one-day competition.
All the bands were competing against a set standard for division ratings assigned by a panel of three adjudicators. The three judges at the contest included Diane Baker of Baytown, Richard Lovelace of New Boston and Nelson Nolden of Highlands.
Bands were judged against an evaluation instrument with set standards for each numerical rating assigned by one of three judges. Each assigned rating has a meaning (i.e. Division I - superior, through Division V - poor).
The Center band received a unanimous No.1 rating by all three judges. The Tenaha band also received unanimous No.1 ratings. The Timpson band was given an overall No.1 rating, receiving a pair of No.1 ratings and a No.2 by one judge. The Joaquin band also received a pair of No.1s and a No.2.
According to Tenaha Superintendent of Schools Don Fallin, Tenaha and Carlisle, which received three No.1 ratings, and Timpson will all move on to the Area competition at Longview High School on Saturday, Oct. 24 among Class 1A schools. Joaquin lost a tie-breaker and will not advance despite its elite rating. Other Class 1A band results included Overton receiving a No.2 rating, Martin's Mill receiving a No.3 rating and the West Sabine band receiving a No.4 rating.
Some other East Texas bands and their ratings include: Nacogdoches, 1; Garrison, 1; San Augustine, 2; Diboll, 2; and Lufkin, 1.
