Leading Pittsburgh by five points in the third quarter Friday night, the Carthage Bulldogs were hoping to use their 'clean slate' and open District 16-3A action on a high note. But a 22-0 run over a period in the final two periods hurt the Dawgs as it enabled the Pirates to come from behind for a 67-47 win in Pittsburgh.

Carthage (4-13) dropped to 0-1 in district action, while Pittsburgh improved to 1-0.

Only one Bulldog player managed to score in double figures as O'Keeron Rutherford dumped in 11 points. Stephen Lewis and Meechie Bowman each chipped in eight points, Tee Goree and Ashton Robertson knocked down six apiece, Trevin Bishop scored five, Broc Jemison scored three and Greg Graves rounded out the CHS scoring with two points.

Carthage, which saw its losing skid extended to six games with the setback, trailed only by six, 16-10, at the end of the opening period, before the Dawgs trimmed that deficit to 26-24 at the break.

The Bulldogs managed to take the lead in the third quarter, but a technical foul called seemed to turn the momentum in the contest. It enabled the Pirates to regain the lead, 43-39 heading into the fourth quarter, before Pittsburgh outscored Carthage 26-8 in the final eight-minute period to pull away.
