The Joaquin Lady Rams begin the 2012 portion of their season just like they wrapped up the end of 2011 on Tuesday night as they shut out the Lady Tigers in the first period and then held Logansport in single-digit scoring the rest of the way in each quarter for a 43-22 victory in Tiger Gymnasium.
The win was the second straight and third in four games for Joaquin, who improved to 11-10 on the year as it prepares to begin District 20-2A action Friday at Waskom (JV,V - 5 p.m.).
Here's a rundown of some of the recent games:
Joaquin 28, Douglass 22 -- Ava Stephens hit 4-of-9 field goals and led the Lady Rams with 11 points as they edged Douglass, 28-22, in a defensive battle last Wednesday in Ram Gymnasium.
Katelyn Cockrell added five points, Whitney Vaughn and Jordan Welch each chipped in four points and Annabeth Vaughn and Mallory Martinez both scored two each for JHS.
Martinez led the Lady Rams on the boards, pulling down two offensive rebounds and finishing with six. Cockrell added four boards, Whitney Vaughn chipped in three and Ryleigh Yates, Welch and Annabeth Vaughn each pulled down two.
Cockrell blocked one shot Cockrell and Whitney Vaughn each recorded three steals and Cockrell also handed out three assists.
Mount Enterprise 40, Joaquin 29 -- In a game played on Dec. 20, Joaquin scored 11 first quarter points to take a four-point lead, but then struggled offensively in the final three periods in a 40-29 setback to Mount Enterprise.
Stephens led all Joaquin scorers with 11 points, despite converting just 4-of-13 field goals. Cockrell hit 3-of-8 for six points, Annabeth Vaughn and Chasity Baker scored four each and Elisabeth Patrick and Whitney Vaughn both scored two.
Baker was the top rebounder for Joaquin with seven, with five of those coming on the defensive end. Annabeth Vaughn pulled down five boards and Stephens, Cockrell and Whitney Vaughn tallied two each.
Stephens handed out four assists to lead Joaquin, while Whitney Vaughn chipped in three. Cockrell tallied four steals.
