The Carthage Bulldogs continue to show improvement on the season after their slow start. The Dawgs posted their third win in their last five outings on Tuesday when they recorded a 54-46 victory over Rusk in Eagle Coliseum.
The win improved the Bulldogs' record to 4-7 on the season heading into the Christmas break. Carthage will return to action on Wednesday (Dec. 28) when the Dawgs take part in the 2011 Wagstaff Holiday Classic at Tyler Junior College.
Tristan Gatlin led the Bulldogs' offensive attack against the Eagles, throwing in 13 points, while Ashton Robertson chipped in 11 points.
Other contributors for CHS included Skyler Allison and O'Keeron Rutherford with nine points each, Meechie Bowman threw in eight points, Broc Jemison chipped in seven points and Stephen Lewis scored two points.
The Bulldogs held the Eagles to just nine points in the first quarter as Carthage opened up a 10-9 lead. The 'Dogs added 16 points in the second quarter to stretch the lead to 26-24.
The Dawgs inched their lead to 40-37 after the third stanza and then Carthage kept up the pressure in the fourth quarter to widen the gap to the eight-point final.
At the Wagstaff Holiday Classic, Carthage will join Tyler All Saints, Arp, Bishop T.K. Gorman, Brook Hill, Bulard, Chapel Hill, East Texas Christian Academy, Grace Community, Henderson, John Tyler, Kings Academy, Lindale, Longview, Mabank, Tatum and Whitehouse in the 17-team field.
The Bulldogs will open pool play on Wednesday against Tyler All-Saints at 10:30 a.m. Carthage will play another pool game on Thursday, taking on Grace Community at 1:30 p.m., before moving on to bracket play on Friday.
