JOAQUIN, Tx -- First-year Joaquin head girls' basketball coach Carrie Obregon has her Lady Rams scrappin' defensively this season. But on Monday they just flat out took charge. The Lady Rams used an aggressive offensive attack and a stingy defense as they built a 12-point first-quarter lead and then held the Lady Bears scoreless for 10:04 of the second half for an easy 41-17 win over cross-county rival Timpson.
The victory snapped a 3-game losing skid for the Lady Rams, as they evened their season record at 9-9. It also snapped a tie in the season series between the two squads, who have already met twice this year. Timpson dropped to 3-8 on the season as the Lady Bears have lost six of their last seven.
"The girls are taking quite a bit of ownership in their record this year and trying to put their best effort on the court every time they step out there," Obregon said after the win. "We've still got a ways to go, but the girls area really working hard."
The Lady Rams won this contest with balanced scoring, as eight different players put the ball in the hoop during the contest. Chasity Baker led the way with a 10-point effort, while Ava Stephens dropped in seven and Katelyn Cockrell and Mallory Martinez pitched in six points apiece. Annabeth Vaughn and Paige Wilburn scored four points each and Whitney Vaughn and Lani Metcalf scored two points apiece.
Jakelia Caraway paced the Timpson offensive attack, but the Lady Bears' leading scorer was held to just 10 points. Tammi Harris added five points and Harley Martin dropped in two.
Defense was the name of the game early on for Joaquin as the Lady Rams slowed down the Timpson fast-break offensive attack, holding the Lady Bears to just five points in the opening stanza to take a 17-5 lead at the end of the first period.
Caraway was held scoreless in the period, while Harris scored all five of Timpson's points. Cockrell paced JHS with four points in the stanza.
Caraway finally was able to get into the offensive flow, somewhat, in the second quarter, scoring four points. But that was the only points scored by the Lady Bears. Meanwhile, Stephens led the Lady Rams with three points as they extended their lead to 24-9 at the break.
After Caraway scored a breakaway layup to begin the third quarter, the Joaquin defense once again put the clamps down, holding the Lady Bears without a point for the remainder of the quarter and the next 10:04 of the game as JHS went on a 14-0 run to widen the lead to 33-11.
Baker scored six points in a row in first part of the third quarter for Joaquin, with two of the buckets coming on second-chance opportunities. Meanwhile, the Lady Rams were forcing eight Timpson turnovers in the period.
Stephens, Martinez and Cockrell then made consecutive shots in the paint to begin the fourth quarter as Joaquin widened the gap and then coasted to the win.
Joaquin will return to action at home today (Tuesday) at 12:30 when the Lady Rams host Mount Enterprise (4-7), before taking some time off for the holidays. The Joaquin boys will follow the girls' game at 2 p.m. The Lady Rams will then host Douglass on Dec. 28 (1 p.m.).
Timpson will not return to game action until Dec. 30 when the Lady Bears host Mount Enterprise.
