GARY, Tx -- The 20th-ranked Douglass knocked off the No.2-ranked Wells Pirates, 71-45, to move in a position to play for the boys' championship at the Gary Basketball Tournament this past weekend and then knocked off 11th-ranked Martinsville, 65-47, Saturday night in the title game of the annual event in Bobcat Gymnasium.

Wells finished third at the event, defeating Gary, 56-38, while 25th-ranked Broaddus placed fifth with a 52-32 win over Joaquin. Chireno took the consolation trophy with a 66-56 win over Timpson.

Gary's Luke Thornton was named to the boys all-tournament team for his effort in the three-day event. Also named were Joaquin's Wyatt Hairgrove and Timpson's Jaylin Rhodes, along with Gary Spencer and Austin Myles of Martinsville, Reed and Bryce Westbrook of Douglass, Hunter Fountain of Chireno, Austin Kollet of Broaddus and Jordy James of wells.

Here's a rundown of Saturday's games involving area teams:

Josh Bowen threw in six points, Matt Wood added five - all in the first quarter - while Connor Coligan chipped in three and Levi Cohorst scored one point.

The Pirates moved out to a 20-10 lead at the end of the opening period and held a 31-19 lead at the half. Gary inched to within 10 at the end of the third quarter, but was outscored 17-9 in the final eight minutes.

Broaddus 52, Joaquin 32 (5th-Place Game) -- Wyatt Hairgrove threw in six fourth-quarter points, but it wasn't enough as Broaddus built a 42-16 lead after three quarters and coasted to the victory in the boys fifth-place contest.

The Rams couldn't find their shooting range as no players scored in double figures. Tra Rogers led Joaquin with eight points, with five of those coming in the third quarter. Hairgrove scored all of his points in the final period, Cody Runnels and Za Cooper each scored five, and Kain Yates, Will Vaughn and P.J. Peterson were each held to two points.

Chireno 66, Timpson 56 (Consolation Game) -- Rhodes scored seven of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to help the Timpson Bears come from behind as they fell to Chireno, 66-56, in the consolation game.

Rieke scored 10 points in the second quarter and nine more in the fourth, but it wasn't enough against the Yellowjackets.

James Jinks added four points for BHS, while Tyler Moon, Joey Wharmby, Juan Garza and Haston Adams each chipped in two points and Devin Faulk scored one point.
