JOAQUIN, Tx -- The Martinsville Lady Pirates posted a spotless 3-0 record to capture top team honors in the girls division of Joaquin's A.J. Lawrence Classic over the weekend, while Shelbyville, along with the Lady Rams tied for second with identical 3-1 marks.
Hemphill posted a 1-2 record at the tourney, while Gary and Logansport each went 1-2. Longview Christian, Timpson and Louisiana School were all 0-2.
Joaquin had a pair of players selected to the all-tournament team, which including Mallory Martinez and Jordan Welch. Shelbyville's Kiera Montgomery was named to the squad, along with Gary's Brittany Odom, with Gabby Spencer and Taylor Enloe from Martinsville and Baylie Butter of Hemphill being honored.
Here's a rundown of action from Friday and Saturday involving area teams:
Joaquin 43, Louisiana School 17 -- Jordan Welch scored 12 of her game-high 16 points in the second half as she led Joaquin to a strong surge past the Louisiana School, 43-17, on Friday.
Mallory Martinez scored 10 of her 12 points in the first half, while Whitney Vaughn added six, Ava Stephens threw in four, Annabeth Vaughn scored three points and Ryleigh Yates scored two.
Tough defense by Joaquin enabled the Lady Rams to move out to a 7-2 lead at the end of the opening quarter and they increased the lead to 20-5 at the half.
It was more of the same in the third quarter as JHS went on an 11-4 run to break the game open with a 31-9 lead heading into the final eight minutes of play.
Shelbyville 46, Timpson 32 -- Kiera Montgomery scored seven of her game-high 17 points in the first quarter as the Shelbyville Lady Dragons opened up a 12-5 lead and then used another late surge to defeat Timpson, 46-32, on Friday.
Kadeshia Turner added 10 points, while Jakera Land threw in six, Haleigh Cooper and Camory Bolton both chipped in four, Summer Williams finished with three and Rashundria Lathan scored two points for Shelbyville.
Rachel Reeves had the hot hand for the Lady Bears, scoring six points in the fourth quarter and finishing with 15 for the game. Jakelia Caraway threw in 11 points, while LaToya Cartwright, Caitlyn Smith and Ke'Ambria Holloway each scored two.
Montgomery scored seven of her team's 12 points in the opening period as the Lady Dragons surged ahead 12-5 after eight minutes of action. But Caraway scored five for Timpson in the second quarter as the Lady Bears inched back to within 18-14 at the half.
Montgomery found her shooting range for SHS in the third, scoring six of her team's 12 points and balanced scoring in the fourth enabled the Lady Dragons to pull away as they outscored the Lady Bears 16-8.
Joaquin 44, Gary 28 -- Welch scored nine of her 13 points in the fourth quarter on Friday as the Lady Rams used her scoring to outduel Gary 16-6 in the period for a 44-28 win.
In addition to Welch's scoring, Martinez added 10 points, Annabeth Vaughn scored six of her nine points in the third quarter, Stephens threw in eight and Katelyn Cockrell scored four points.
Brittany Odom and Collyn Pinkerton led the Lady Bobcats with eight points apiece, while Macie Innerarity threw in four, Channa Bird scored three and Riley Beckham added two points.
Joaquin overcame Pinkerton's six points in the first period to take a 12-9 lead. Odom then scored all of Gary's five points in the second quarter as the Lady Bobcats trimmed the JHS lead to 15-14 at the break.
Annabeth Vaughn scored six in the third stanza for Joaquin as the Lady Rams widened the lead with a 13-8 scoring advantage. Welch then helped Joaquin pull away in the fourth by scoring nine of her team's 16 points.
Shelbyville 40, Louisiana School 15 -- The Shelbyville Lady Dragons scored 22 points in the opening eight minutes of play on Friday against Louisiana School and they coasted to a 40-15 victory.
Montgomery led Shelbyville with 14 points in the game, while Camory Bolton added six points, Andrea Cartwright threw in five and Williams and Land each chipped in four points. Cooper scored three points in the win, while Turner and Sierra Redmond managed two points apiece.
Shelbyville 39, Logansport 22 -- Bolton scored seven of her game-high 13 points in the fourth quarter to lead Shelbyville to their third win of the tournament on Saturday when they blasted Logansport, 39-22.
Montgomery chipped in eight points, with seven of her points coming in the first half as eight different players scored for the Lady Dragons. Turner dumped in five points, Williams added four and Shameria Lathan, Cooper, Rashundria and Land each scored two points.
Shanterica Wilson led Logansport with seven points, while Amy Grafton added six.
Hemphill 41, Gary 20 -- Chelsea Powdrill scored seven points and Pinkerton added four more, but the Gary Lady Bobcats couldn't outscore Hemphill, falling 41-20, on Saturday.
Innerarity, Bird and Odom each added three points for Gary.
Martinsville 43, Joaquin 13 -- In the Saturday game which gave Martinsville the championship, the Joaquin Lady Rams couldn't find their shooting range and were outscored by the Lady Pirates, 43-13.
Martinez and Chasity Baker each scored four points to lead the Lady Rams, with Whitney Vaughn adding three points and Welch scoring two.
