Bands from the five Shelby County school districts will participate in the annual Region XXI University Interscholastic League marching band competition on Saturday (Oct. 17) at Homer Bryce Stadium on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. They will join bands from across the East Texas area competing against a set standard for division ratings assigned by a panel of three adjudicators.
Shelby County bands will be marching at the following times: Timpson ISD, 9:15 a.m.; Tenaha ISD, 10:30 a.m.; Joaquin ISD, 10:45 a.m.; Shelbyville ISD, 12:05 p.m.; and Center ISD, 2:45 p.m.
Bands will be judged against an evaluation instrument with set standards for each numerical rating assigned by one of three judges. Each assigned rating has a meaning (i.e. Division I - superior, through Division V - poor). The judge also offers performance suggestions via cassette tapes and written comments.
This is the seventh year the Region XXI UIL marching contest will be held on a Saturday, instead of on two weekdays. Competition will begin at 9 a.m. with the Class 1A schools and continues all day through Class 5A competition, ending at 8:30 p.m. with Robert E. Lee High School.
Admission is free to the public.
