The Center 8th grade 'A' football team saw Carthage take a 16-6 halftime lead last Thurday night and then neither team could score in the second half as CMS fell on the road to the Bulldogs.
The Roughriders had a pair of starters out with injuries, but still gave the Bulldogs a battle. After Carthage scored first, Center's Chavis Gregory scored on a touchdown run of eight yards as Center rebounded.
Center had another opportunity to score and give the Bulldogs a 'run for their money,' but a fumble on the Carthage three-yard line stopped the scoring opportunity in the red zone.
Center Coach Joey Williams said that the big play hurt Center. But he added that, for the most part, the 'Riders did a good job on defense.
Penalties hampered the Center offense as the Roughriders had several big gains called back because of yellow flags. CMS also had a 60-yard kickoff return called back, in addition to a 40-yard reverse and two more runs of 40-plus yards.
The 'Riders will host Diboll on Thursday. Seventh grade action will begin at 5 p.m., with the eighth grade to follow.
