Several area teams will be participating in the annual Martinsville Pirate Basketball Tournament, which begins Thursday and will be played through Saturday in Pirate Gymnasium. Boys and girls teams from Joaquin, Timpson and Gary will participate, along with the Shelbyville Lady Dragons.
In the boys' bracket, Timpson will tip-off its season at 10 a.m. Thursday against Douglass in a first-round matchup. Gary and Joaquin will square off at 7 p.m. This will be the Rams' season opener after having a game cancelled last week. The Bobcats are 0-1 after falling to Wells on Tuesday.
Other first-round contests include Zavalla taking on Centerville at 1 p.m. and Martinsville battling Chester at 4 p.m.
The winner of the Timpson-Douglass game will take on the winner of the Zavalla-Centerville matchup on Friday at 4 p.m., with the losers squaring off at 1 p.m. The winner of the Martinsville-Chester game will tangle with the winner of the Gary-Joaquin game on Friday at 7 p.m. The losers will play at 10 a.m.
The boys Consolation game is set for Saturday at 10:30 a.m., with the third-place contest set for 1:30 p.m. and the title game at 4:30 p.m.
In the girls' bracket, Timpson's Lady Bears will open their season against Douglass at 8:30 a.m. The Shelbyville Lady Dragons will put their 2-1 season mark on the line against Centerville at 11:30 a.m.
Gary and Joaquin will play at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Rams are 0-1 after a 38-23 setback to Hemphill on Tuesday night. The Lady Bobcats are 0-3 after losses to Douglass, New Summerfield and Wells to open the year.
In the other first-round girls' matchup, Martinsville and Chester will play at 2:30 p.m.
On Friday, the winner of the Timpson-Douglass game will take on the Shelbyville-Centerville winner at 2:30 p.m. in a winners' bracket contest. The loser of the game will meet at 11:30 a.m. The winner of the Martinsville-Chester first-round matchup will square off against the winner of the Gary-Joaquin game on Friday at 5:30 p.m., while the losers' will play at 8:30 a.m.
The girls' Consolation is scheduled for Saturday at 9 a.m., with the third-place game set for 12 p.m. and the title contest is slated for 3 p.m.
