Area runners Mathew Wood of Gary and Austin Edwards of Garrison earned berths in the Class 1A Region III Cross Country Meet in Humble after corralling individual top 10 finishes last Tuesday at the District 20-1A Cross Country Meet.
LaPoynor won the district team title, scoring 42 points, while New Summerfield placed second with 56. Cushing posted the third-best score of 67. Member of all three schools, along with the top 10 individual finishers will move on to compete at Atascosita High School in Humble this Saturday at regional competition.
Alto placed fourth in the varsity boys competition with 82 points, while Gary placed fifth with 102. Athletes from Garrison, Beckville and Martin's Mill also competed, but they didn't have enough participants to qualify for team totals.
Wood earned the No.2 spot in the individual competition as the Bobcat ran a 19:55.5. Garrison's Edwards posted the ninth-best finish with a 21:20.2.
John Duffin of Cushing won the individual competition with a time of 19:05.3, while New Summerfield's Manuel Hernandez came in third with a 20:18.7. Justin Harrell of Martin's Mill ran a 20:23.5 for the fourth spot and Fransico Parra of New Summerfield placed fifth with a time of 20:24.0.
The sixth through 10th place finishers included: J. Adam Burcham of Martin's Mill with a 20:39.2 for sixth, Ashton Abendroth of LaPoynor coming in seventh with a 20:46.8, Coy Gonzales of LaPoynor with the 8th spot with a 21:05.5 and Celso Perez of Alto running 10th with a 21:31.5.
Other finishers for Gary included: Jonathan Jordan coming in 27th with a 24:26.5; Colton Coleman in 28th with a 24:42.8; Justin Singletary in 33rd with a 25:58.0; Randall Williams placing 34th with a 25:58.2; Cameron Coligan posting a 26:13.0 for 35th; and Hampton Baird coming in 36th with a 26:13.5.
Beckville had three runners competing. Victor Solis crossed the finish line 21st with a 23:18.7, Juan Garza ran a 25:00 for 30th and Cesar Laredo came in 31st with a 30:30.5.
In the junior varsity boys competition, Gary's Josh Boykin ran fourth with a 25:37. Seth Huff posted the 10th-place finish with a 28:01.4 and Cody Bridges was 12th with a 33:10.7.
