Led by Ali Baty and Catashia Walker, the Shelbyville Lady Dragon cross country team posted four medalists Wednesday as they took the District 25-1A championship at Zavalla and once again earned a spot at the Class 1A Region IV Meet in San Antonio next week.
Baty, Walker, Adaishia Cartwright and Camory Bolton all finished in the top 10 and earned medalist honors for Shelbyville. With the first-place finish, all members of the team will be making a return trip to the Region IV event on Saturday, Nov. 5, in San Antonio.
This marks the fourth consecutive year that the Lady Dragons will be making the trip to the Regional Cross Country Meet. They are under the direction of Stephany Carter.
Baty placed second at the league meet, posting a time of 12:37, while Walker came in third with a 13:02. Cartwright ran fourth with a time of 13:12 and Bolton earned the eighth spot with a 13:34.
Other members of the Shelbyville team and their finishing places included: Emma Walker placing 12th with a time of 14:04; Ashley Sellman came in 13th with a time of 14:23; and Tiara Johnson posted a 14:33, which was good enough for 16th place overall.
The Lady Dragon junior varsity squad also finished first overall at the District 25-1A competition.
Shelbyville's Jazlynn Babin captured first in the individual JV competition, running a 14:16, while Kelsie Pennington placed fourth with a 15:09 and Laney Porter ran fifth with a 15:12. Lakwuaneshia McClelland posted the sixth-best time of 15:40 and Amy Permenter was eighth with a time of 16:02.
In the junior varsity boys' competition, Shelbyville's Jessie Rose placed third overall, running the event in 21:51. Lewis Dales was seventh with a 23:51 and Mikel Carter came in ninth with a time of 25:24.
