CENTER, Tx -- Led by the personal-best times set by Center's Bryan Ruiz and Jose Tello, the Center Roughrider boys cross country team claimed top honors Saturday at the Rider Invitational held here at Center High School.
"It was a good meet with some great efforts by our kids," said Center cross counry coach Donna Shannon. "Now we'll take this coming weekend off and get a good feel for the district course when we attend the Hudson meet (on Oct. 8)."
Varsity Boys
Center took the varsity boys top honors with 29 points, followed by Jasper with 36 and West Sabine with 89 points. Gary scored 103 points for fourth and Carthage was fifth with 108 points.
Jasper's Simon Mijares took top honors with a time of 17:50, while Center's Ruiz was second with an 18:08 and Andres Mijares of Jasper was third with an 18:49. Center's Perez placed fourth with a 19:01, Gary's Matt Wood ran fifth with a 19:04 and Jose Tello of Center also set a personal best with a sixth-place finish of 19:05.
Center's Eric Gonzalez was eighth with a 19:53 (personal best), Daniel Woodhatch ran ninth with a 20:03.
Gary competitors included Trey Reneau running 19th, Colton Coleman coming in 22nd, Justin Singletary running 28th and Hampton Baird placing 29th.
Carthage's Tanner O'Dell ran 13th overall, with Christian Padron coming in 18th, Blake Hernandez running 23rd and Trevor Julian coming in 24th.
Junior Varsity Boys
In the junior varsity boys' division, Jasper placed first overall with 33 points, with Center coming in second with 38 and Tenaha taking third with 50 points.
Garrison's Austin Edwards won the junior varsity boys competition with a time of 19:34, with Jasper's Juan Nevarette placing second with a 20:54 and teammate Caesar Sierra placing third with a 21:05. Center's Edward Mireles coming in fourth set a personal best mark with a 21:06 and Tenaha's Damien Reece running fifth.
Center's Jonatan Rangel posted the sixth-best time of 21:11, with Roughrider Ren Evans coming in eighth (personal best of 21:49) and Tenaha's Edgar Flores and Ricky Corpus running ninth and 10th, respectively.
Other Center competitors included Miguel Harvey placing 12th, Jay Berry running a personal best of 22:47 and placing 13th, Jason Guzman taking 14th, Jaylon McCollister setting a personal mark of 24:34 and placing 17th, Lonzo Weathered coming in 27th and Ian Moore running 29th.
Gary's Clay Myers ran 22nd, while teammate Seth Huff ran 24th, Josh Boykin came in 26th.
Tenaha's Rafael Loredo ran 18th, Seth Wyatt was 19th, Leon Aguilar posted the 20th-best time, Jamie Mendoza was 30th and Josh Dorsey ran 31st.
Shelbyville's Mikel Carter came in 23rd, while Nolan Borders was 25th in the competition.
Junior High Boys
Central Heights won the junior high boys division, followed by Shelbyville second and West Sabine was third.
Carthage's Ethan Rymel won the junior high boys' division with a time of 9:27.
Gary's Delane Bird ran 27th, Josh Holeman came in 28th, Jacob Rushton was 29th and Austin Morton finished 30th.
Shelbyville's ryan Alvis led the Dragons with an 8th-place finish, while Ivan Luna of Shelbyville was 9th and Jeron Boykins was 10th. Tavion Barnes ran 16th, Sam Windham ran 19th and Octavian Burrell ran 23rd and Trent Colgrove was 31st.
