A pair of Carthage amateur golfers continued their strong summer runs last week in two stops on the Ark-La-Tex Junior Golf Tour as Olivia Boone and Courtlynd Miller finished second and third, respectively, in tourneys in Longview and Texarkana.
The youth summer 15-stop tour which runs just over eight weeks and consists of four boys' age groups, three girls' and one co-ed, continued on Monday of this week in Canton and will be in Idabel, Okla. on Thursday of this week before taking next week off.
Carthage golfers continue their steady play during the summer on Monday, June 20, at Wood Hollow Golf Course in Longview.
In the Girls' 15-18 Division, Boone placed second with a score of 79, while Miller was just four strokes behind her with an 83. Miller tied with Molli Taylor of Quitman for third place. Ashley Carrell of Texarkana outshot the field in the division, finishing with a one-round total of 68, winning by 11 strokes.
Carthage's Miller Harris placed second in the Boys' 10-11 Division, shooting a half-round score of 40. He was four strokes behind Kade Keith of Texarkana, who posted a 36. Jackson Sampson of Diana came in third with a 46.
There was a College Boys' Division at this event, with Dayton Cargill of Longview shooting a 70 to take first. Devin McIlwain of Tatum was 11 shots behind with an 81.
In the Boys' 16-18, Austin Graff of Longview captured top honors with a 75, one shot ahead of Hallsville's Ty Pearson, who scored a 76.
Longview golfers swept the Boys' 14-15 Division with Andrew Stuckey shooting a 74, Matthew Stanley coming in second with a 78 and Caleb McGaugh placed third with a 79.
Reed Fisher of Longview won the Boys' 12-13 Division with a 69. He was two shots ahead of second-place Wilson Powell of Jefferson, who had a 71 and Reese Nichols of Texarkana was third with a 76.
In the Girls' 12-14 Division, Mykayala Fontaine of Longview placed first with a 40, with Daingerfield's Katie Cox placing second with a 32 and Hallsville Taylor Adair placing third with a 46.
The Co-Ed 7-9 saw Samuel Benson of Gilmer shoot a 42 and Wesley Spangler of Longview place second with a 44.
Texarkana Golf Ranch Tournament
The Thursday, June 23, stop on the tour was a youth/adult combination as each youth was teamed up with an experienced golfer. Boone and Miller placed second and third, respectively in the Girls' 15-18 Division.
Boone played with Sleepy Reynolds and the duo shot a 69, which was one stroke behind Emma Edwards and Tommy Edwards of Texarkana, who shot a 68. Miller and Jack Ellett tied for third in the division, along with Taylor and Bill Dunlap of Quitman and Haley Ware and Steve Ware of Atlanta. All three groups shot 70s.
Carthage's Wade Davis played with Clay Davis and the two combined for a 68, which was a three-way tie for third in the Boys' 14-15 Division. Taylor and Tony Nichols of Idabel won the division with a 67, Russell and Philip Thomas of Texarkana won the tie-breaker and placed second with a 68.
Jacob and Matt Benson of Gilmer and Baldwin and Bud Posey of Mount Pleasant also shot 68s to tie for third with the Carthage duo.
Chris and Mike Courson of Texarkana won the Boys' 16-18 Division with a 76, easily outdistancing Chris and Steve Holmes of Atlanta, who posted a score of 84.
Wilson and Justin Powell of Jefferson won the Boys' 12-13 Division with a 63 and Ethan and Jason Eppinette of Texarkana won the tie-breaker to claim top honors.
In more girls' results, Camryn and Tom Parsons won the 12-14 Division with a 36, Torrey and Daniel Jones of Paris captured the Girls' 10-11 Division with a 43 and Wade Yantis and Chuck Johns of Pittsburgh escaped with a one-stroke victory in the Co-Ed 7-9 Division, shooting a 41.
