After finishing the first round with a 78, Carthage golfer Olivia Boone shot a second-round score of 77 to improve three positions to finish tied for sixth in the 2011 University Interscholastic League (UIL) Class 3A Girls Golf Tournament Friday at Roy Kizer Golf Course in Austin.
Starting the final round seven strokes off the lead with a 78, Boone finished the two-day tournament just seven strokes off the lead with a two-round score of 155. Andrews' Sarah Black began the final round tied for fourth with a 75, but surged into a tie with Salado's Taylor O'Rear with a two-day score of 148. O'Rear had led after the first round, but struggled with a 77 in the second 18 holes.
Black and O'Rear then battled in a one-hole playoff, in which Black secured the win to capture top Medalist honors. O'Rear's 71 on the first day was the tournament's best score for 18 holes of golf.
Brenna Moore of Burkburnett was second after the first round with a 73 and finished third with a second-round score of 77 to score a 150.
Olivia Esparza of Yoakum made the biggest surge in the individual honors on the second day, moving up from 10th place (80) after the first day to a fourth-place medalist finish with a two-day score of 153. Kari Rosser of Hudson rounded out the top five individual honors, shooting a 154.
Andrews won the Class 3A girls' team title with a two-day score of 618. AHS led the first round by 16 strokes - with a 312 - over Burkburnett (328) and improved its score by six strokes (306) in the final round to win the event by 40 strokes.
Lampasas shot a two-round total of 684 to secure third place, 66 strokes off the lead and 26 strokes behind second-place Burkburnett. Yoakum placed fourth with a two-day total of 700 and Prosper was in fifth with a 709.
As a team, Carthage was in seventh place after the first day with a 364. The Lady Dawgs shot a 363 in the second round to remain in the seventh spot. Gatesville placed sixth with a 722 and Hudson rounded out the team totals with a score of 756.
Carthage's Courtlynd Miller was in 21st place after shooting an opening round score of 85, but improved her position by two spots on the final day by shooting an 83 to finish with a score of 168 and in the Top 20.
Other individual efforts by Carthage players included Lauren Addington placing 42nd with a 201, Anneth Garcia shot a 203 for 43rd place and Kailyn Rogers posting a 218 for 46th.
