T&F: Garrison, Timpson athletes headed to State

PALESTINE, Tx -- The Timpson Bear 4x200-meter relay, along with Timpson's Lorenzo Young, shone bright as the sun last Tuesday evening as they earned a trip to the State Track & Field Meet in Austin with their top two finishes at the Class 1A Region III Meet here at Wildcat Stadium. The Bears were fourth overall, scoring 39 points.

The Garrison Lady Bulldogs also will be represented well in Austin as several of athletes qualified by finishing in the top two of their regional events to help the team to a third-place finish overall.

The top two finishers in each event qualify for the State Meet in Austin. This year the ninth-best time in the running events and measurement in the field events will be accepted as a sort of a 'wildcat'.

Collinsville won the overall boys competition at the meet with a team total of 77 points. Lindsay finished second with 55 points, Lovelady was third with 40 and Timpson was fourth. Bosqueville placed fifth (32) and Alto came in sixth (30).

Garrison's girls were third overall, scoring 64 points, while Lindsay captured top honors with 110 points, Era was second with 84 and Grapeland was fourth with 49 points.

Here's a rundown of some of the area leaders at the Class 1A meet:

BOYS' DIVISION
Young posted a time of 39.24 to capture top honors in the 300-meter hurdles. He ran the event in 39.24, while Louis Dominguez of Rice was second with a 39.60 and James Lundy of Lovelady came in third with a 39.66.

The Bear 4x200-meter relay foursome of Benny Zuniga, Rody Paige, Lorenzo Yong and Jaylin Rhodes will compete against the state's best in Austin after finishing second in the event in Palestine. THS posted a time of 1:30.74. Collinsville won the event with a 1:30.25 and Mart was third with a 1:31.87. Alto ran the fourth-best time of 1:32.03.

The Bear 4x100-meter relay just missed qualifying for State as they posted the third-best time with a 43.68. The foursome was made up of Benny Zuniga, Rhodes, young and Rody Paige.

The Collinsville 4x100-meter relay ran first with a 43.20 and Lindsay was a close second with a 43.43. Alto placed fifth with a 44.36.

Timpson's Jaylin Rhodes placed sixth in the 100-meter dash, posting a time of 11.50. Anthony Martin of Mart claimed top honors with an 11.09, with Michael Carpenter of Bosqueville coming in second with an 11.23.

Garrison's Austin Edwards ran seventh in the 800-meter run, recording a time of 2:11.72. Jonathan White of Bremond and teammate Jacob White finished 1-2, respectively. Jonathan ran a 1:58.01 and Jacob posted a time of 2:00.86.

Timpson's Young also competed in the high jump. Garrison's Chris Feaster placed seventh in the pole vault with a 10-6.

Beckville's Demontre Allison came in 12th in the long jump with a distance of 18-7.5. Lavadrick Singletary of Alto captured top honors with a 21-0, while Trinidad's Darius Boggas was second with a 20-11.

Garrison's Josh Williams placed 10th in the discus throw with a distance of 120-11.5. Austin Cook of Overton placed first with a 159-2 and Trey McGowan of Kerens was second with a measurement of 153-0.

GIRLS' DIVISION
Garrison's Jasia Berry won the 100-meter high hurdles, posting a time of 15.48. Demi Koelzer of Muenster finished second with a 15.93 and Savanah Neal of Cumby finished third with a 16.64. Two more Lady Bulldogs competed in the event. Jennifer Walker posted a 16.96 for sixth place and Kelsey Bass ran a 19.03, which put her in eighth place.

Garrison's Berry also won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles event and will compete at State in that competition. She ran the event in 46.99. Carlee Black of Era was second with a time of 47.49.

Walker came in second in the high jump and will be in Austin competing for the state's best. She leaped 5-1 at the Region III Meet. Natalie Alexander of Malakoff won the event with a 5-3.

Beckville's Taylor Lindsay tied for seventh in the event, clearing a height of 4-7. Lindsay's teammate, Ivy Rieke, also tied for seventh with a 4-7.

Garrison's Kelsey Bass placed second in the pole Vault, clearing 8-5 and earning the right to compete in Austin at the State meet. Beckville's Devin Woodall also competed at the Region III Meet, as did Garrison's Bridgett Bass.

Shelby Gresham of Garrison will compete in the shot put in Austin. She placed second overall with a distance of 37-3. Larisa Lewis of Wolfe City captured top honors with a 38-4.5.

In the 100-meter dash, Timpson's Jakelia Caraway just missed a trip to Austin by finishing third in the event. She posted a time of 13.07, which was behind Iesha Wells of Alto (12.81) and Ashton Reynolds of Lindsey (13.03). Mount Enterprise's Alesha Townsend came in fifth in the event with a time of 13.19.

Caraway posted a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash, recording a time of 27.24. Jacy Steelman of Era took top honors with a 25.83 and Shaterrika Campbell of Grapeland was second with a 26.43. Shawnta Knox of Cayuga placed third with a 27.07.

Garrison's Megan Davidson placed eighth in the 1600-meter run, finishing the event in 6:04.67. Kelsey Hermes and Lauren Gibbs, both of Lindsey, finished first and second, respectively, in the competition. Hermes time was a 5:06.76. Gibbs had a 5:27.85.

Davis also competed in the 3200-meter run, finishing in 13th place with a time of 13:34.45. Gibbs of Lindsay was first in the event with an 11:50.55, while Hawkins' Brittany Cox an second with an 11:51.19.

Garrison's 4x100-meter relay ran fourth at the Regional meet. The foursome of Shamika Nichols, Jennifer Walker, Kelsey Bass and Jasia Berry posted a time of 51.55. Grapeland won the competition with a 50.37.

Jennifer Walker of Garrison placed fourth in the triple jump, with a distance of 35-2.50. Her teammate, Jasia Berry, came in sixth with a distance of 34-2.50.

Gresham originally just missed advancing in the discus, finishing third with a throw of 118-11. However her distance was the ninth-best in the state, which earned her the 'wildcard' spot at the State meet. Ashley Ross of Milford won the event with a 123-7 and Kristin Smithey of Hubbard was second with a 120-8.50. Douglass' Jessica Raines placed 13th with a 67.0.
