T&F: 'Riders run into stiff competition at Regional

Hubbard places 8th in 200, Gipson 5th in the 100-meters

The competition at the Class 3A Region III Track & Field Meet in Humble was stiff, but the Center athletes gave it their best shot during last week's event at Turner Stadium.

The Lady Riders scored two points at the meet, which was won by Waco Connally with 70 points. Silsbee placed second with 62 points and Mexia was third overall with 56.

West Orange-Stark won first place with 77 points, with Stafford placing second with 54 and Rockdale coming in a close third with 50 points. The Center boys' track team failed to score at the competition.

The top two competitors in each event qualify for state. The ninth-best running time in the state (from all four regions) also receives a berth to state as well.

BOYS COMPETITION
Center senior Ty Hubbard placed 8th in the 200-meters, running a 23.07. He qualified for the finals with the 8th-best time of 22.76, placing fourth in his heat. Center sophomore Augustine Johnson didn't make the finals, posting a time of 24.13 in the prelims.

Justin Thomas of West Orange-Stark won the event with a time of 21.54, with William Deer of Caldwell placing second with a 21.82 and Royce Caldwell of Columbus running third with a 21.93.

'Rider senior Quincy Ratcliff placed 10th in the shot put with a distance of 44-10. Rodney Brown of Navasota won the event with a 58-3.50, Cedric Reed of Cleveland posting a distance of 54-0 for second and Leraven Clark of Rockdale coming in third with a 51-4.25.

Roughrider senior JaTarvis Jackson ran a 54.62 in the preliminaries in the 400-meters, while teammate DeJalen Preston, a freshman, posted a time of 55.41. Neither athlete made the finals.

Colin Janice of West Orange-Stark won the 400-meters with a time of 49.50, with Kevonte Shaw of Shepherd placing second with a 50.19.

The Center 4x100-meter relay foursome of senior Tre Sudds, Ty Hubbard, sophomore Shaquille Ingram and sophomore K.J. Garrett ran the 14th-best time in the preliminaries with a time of 43.89.

West Orange-Stark won the event with a 42.02, with Chapel Hill coming in second with a 43.08 and Caldwell posting a 43.27 for third.

The Roughrider 4x200-meter relay foursome of Garrett, Ingram, Sudds and Hubbard posted a time of 1:43.44 in the preliminaries, which was good enough for 16th, but didn't qualify them for the finals.

West Orange-Stark won the event with a 1:28.09, with Chapel Hill placing second with a 1:30.17 and Stafford posting a 1:30.23, which gave the foursome third.

Hubbard placed 15th in the long jump with a distance of 20-6.75. Brandon Ashcraft of Robinson captured the event with a 22-11.50, with Joe Witwer of Huffman placing second with a 22-9.75 and Gabriel Hammer of Sealy taking third with a 22-4.5.

GIRLS COMPETITION
Center Lady Rider freshman Jasmine Gipson qualified for the finals in the 100-meters with a time of 12.63, while teammate Raven Greene, a freshman, didn't make the final cut with a 13.44.

Gipson posted a time of 12.72 in the finals, which gave her fifth and two points. Shalaya Simmons of Bellville won the race with a 12.13, with Kayla Winkfield of Giddings running second with a 12.29 and Johnesha Sims of West Orange-Stark claiming third with a 12.31.

Center's Greene posted a time of 28.67 in the 200-meters, but didn't qualify for the finals. Shalaya Simmons of Bellville won the event with a 25.00, with Ashley Johnson of Silsbee posting a 25.03 and Victoria Bowie of Chapel Hill running third with a 25.53.

Center's Jasmine Gipson came in 13th in the long jump, with a distance 15-7.75. Paula Gipson of Waco Connally topped the competitors with an 18-00.25, with Shelbee Pier of Huffman Hairgrove coming in second with a 17-7.75 and Kayla Winkfield of Giddings coming in third with a 17-2.25.
