T&F: Davis, Gillaspie top Region IV qualifiers

Tenaha junior Reginald Davis will be participating at the Class 1A Region IV Meet in San Antonio in three events, while Shelbyville's Brandon Gillaspie advanced in two in the Boys Division of the Class 1A Region IV District 25-26 Area Track & Field Meet held in Zavalla recently.
The top four individual and relay teams in each event advance to the Class 1A Region IV Track & Field Meet at Judson High School in San Antonio on May 2-3. Tenaha will be represented in three individual events and one relay, while the Dragons will be participating in six events.
West Hardin won the Boys Division with 93 points, with Evadale placing a close second with 80. West Sabine scored 72 points for third and Burkeville and High Island tied for the fourth spot with 52 points apiece. Goodrich scored 43 points for sixth place.
Tenaha's Davis and Shelbyville's Jesten Brown finished 1-2 in the 100-meters. Davis posted a time of 10.70, while Brown sprinted across the finish line with an 11.02. Nick Randale of West Sabine placed third with an 11.10, Danzel Victor of Sabine Pass was fourth with an 11.24 and Gary Spencer of Martinsville placed fifth with an 11.26.
Davis also posted the best time in the 200-meter dash. He ran the event in 22.18, outsprinting Dexter Brooks of Burkeville, who posted a time of 22.37. Shelbyville's Gillaspie was third with a 23.14, James Lupeackfa of High Island was fourth with a 23.58.
The Tigers' 4x100-meter relay placed third in the event. The foursome of Davis, Jose Campos, Chavis Gregory and Shaquille Mitchell recorded a time of 44.81. West Sabine took top honors with a 44.36, Burkeville placed second with a 44.49 and Sabine Pass came in fourth with a 45.21.
Shelbyville's 4x200-meter relay placed sixth with a time of 1:37.02.
The Dragons' Jeffrey Cagle also qualified for the Regional meet, placing third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:08.05. Garrett Wright of Zavalla won the event with a time of 2:07.81, Apple Springs' Zachary Gillham was second with a 2:07.96 and Dean McIntyre of West Sabine placed fourth with a 2:08.52.
The Dragons' Christian Perez and Jessie Rose were 2-3 in the pole vault to qualify for the Region IV Meet. Perez cleared 10-0 and Rose topped 9-0. Hunter Darion of West Hardin won the event with a 12-0.
The Tigers' LaDarren Cooks came in third in the shot put, with a distance of 42-8.5. DeAaron Roland just missed a trip to regionals with a fifth-place finish of 37-03. Adam Stark of Evadale placed first with a 43-9 and George Whitaker of Spurger placed second with a 43-4.
Gillaspie leaped 39-4.5 in the triple jump, which was good enough for third. Miles Loop of High Island easily won the event with a 41-4, with West Hardin's Justin Harrington placing second with a 39-7. Deven Murphy of Evadale was third with a 39-0.5.
Martinsville's 4x400-meter relay ran a fourth-place time of 3:47.46. West Hardin ran first with a 3:34.08, Evadale was second and Goodrich ran third.
Burkeville won the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:31.93. West Sabine posted the second-best time, High Island ran third and West Sabine fourth.
Chireno's Dante Starling placed fifth in the 400-meter dash, with a time of 56.35. George Tucker of Goodrich took top honors with a time of 52.43 and Devon Murphy of Evadale was second with a 53.44.
Martinsville's Daniel Burnett placed sixth in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:22.27. Zavalla's Garrett Wright's time of 5:04.99 was good enough for first place.
The Martinsville duo of Mike Spencer and Austino Myles finished 4th-5th in the high jump. Spencer cleared 5-10 and Myles jumped 5-8. Kaleb Rawles of Evadale was first with a 5-10.
Chireno's Dante Starling placed sixth in the long jump with an 18-4.50. Miles Loop of High Island won the event with a distance of 21-0.
