T&F: Bears take second at Area meet

Led by four first-place finishes and a pair of seconds by its two relay teams, the Timpson Bears claimed second place last week at the Class 1A Region III District 19-20 Area Track & Field Meet held in Hawkins.

Timpson will advance to the Class 1A Region III Track & Field Meet in Palestine on May 2-3 in five individual events, with a pair of relays also participating. Garrison posted two second-place finishes, a third and a fourth at the Area meet and will be moving on as well.

The top four individual and relays at the Area meet will participate in the Region III meet.

Garrison will be advancing athletes in four events as the Bulldogs took a pair of second-place finishes, along with a third and a fourth.

Alto claimed the team title with 92 points, with the Bears finishing a close second with 81. Clarksville placed third with 53, Overton managed 49 for fourth, Hawkins scored 46 for fifth, Simms Bowie accumulated 44 for sixth, Garrison was seventh with 32 points and Maud placed eighth with 29 points.

Timpson's 4x100-meter relay foursome of Benjamin Zuniga, Jaylin Rhodes, Lorenzo Young and Rody Paige came in second, posting a time of 44.14. Clarksville won the event in 43.89, while Alto was third with a time of 44.52.

The Bear 4x200-meter relay team of Zuniga, Rhodes, Page and Young also claimed second place, posting a time of 1:32.19. Alto was first in this event with a 1:32.08, while Maud came in third with a time of 1:35.03.

Timpson's Javarcea Bussey posted the top time in the 110-meter high hurdles, finishing in 16.38. David Hensley of Simms Bowie was second with a 16.70 and Elijah Turner of Hawkins ran third with a 17.23.

Rody Paige of Timpson recorded a time of 11.27 to win the 100-meters and advance to the regional meet. Randy Majia of Fruitvale was second with an 11.29. The Bears' Jaylin Rhodes placed fifth with an 11.59, just missing the regional meet by 0.02.

Lorenzo Young won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles, with a time of 39.98. Timothy Hawkins of Overton was second with a 43.21. Bussey of Timpson claimed he fourth spot with a 44.13.

Zuniga placed sixth in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 23.73. Christopher Harris of Overton took first with a 22.61.

Lorenzo Young won the high jump as he cleared 6-0. McLeod's Heston McLauren also cleared 6-0, but Young won on jumps.

Young placed sixth in the long jump with a distance of 20-5.5. Detroit's Crey Dickenson won the event with a 21-5.5.

Bussey claimed sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 38-9.5. Maud's Leonardo Conketon leaped 43-2 to win the event.

For Garrison, Cade Kendrick placed eighth in the 3200-meter run, posting a time of 12:32.

The Bulldogs' Austin Edwards placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:06.30, while Lloyd Spurgeon of Simms Bowie took top honors with a 2:05.21.

In the Garrison field events competitors, Josh Williams placed second in the discus with a throw of 135-5. Austin Cook of Overton threw a 158-3 for first place.

Chris Feaster and Jesse Garcia placed third and fourth, respectively, in the pole vault as both cleared 10-0.

Williams also competed in the shot put, placing fifth with a throw of 43-10. Overton's Cook won the event with a 48-10.5.
