DIBOLL Tx -- The Center Roughrider track team posted three first-place finishes, including the 4x200-meter relay, as CHS sprinted to a third-place finish at the District 18-3A Track & Field Meet held Tuesday and Wednesday here at Lumberjack Stadium.
Jasper had too many athletes garnering too many spots to be denied the overall title with 150 points as the Bulldogs took the championship from the Center team which was the defending champ. The Bulldogs only had three first-place finishes, but picked up enough supporting points to claim the title by 23 points over Hudson (127).
"It's all about team," said newly hired Jasper Athletics Director Garrett Morgan, formerly an assistant at Carthage. "We tried to get the kids to buy into the team concept in track this season and it has paid off. We had more than 50 kids come out for track and they now understand that a point here and a point there adds up.
"Track is a team sport just like any other sport when it comes to district championships. It takes everybody contributing."
Center scored 112 points to easily outdistance fourth-place Kirbyville (89 points). Diboll scored 72 points for fifth, Huntington scored 53 points and placed sixth and Central was seventh with six points.
The top three finishers in each event will advance to the Class 3A Region III Meet, set for May 2-3, in Humble.
The Center 4x200-meter relay will highlight the Roughriders that will be headed to the regional meet as the foursome of K.J. Garrett, Se'Ryan Netherly, Tre Sudds and Ty Hubbard posted a time of 1:32.248 to claim top honors. Jasper was second with a time of 1:32.478 in a close race.
Sudds will also be headed to the regional meet in the 100-meters, claiming the top spot in a time of 11.441. Lefredrick Ford of Kirbyville was second with a time of 11.541. Another Center athlete, Shaquille Ingram, ran fifth with a time of 11.71.
Hubbard claimed supremacy in the 200-meters, posting a time of 22.746. He clipped Carlos Lewis of Diboll, who ran a 23.747. Center's Augustine Johnson placed third with a 23.914 and Jamarcus Jones of CHS was eighth with a time of 24.515.
More regional qualifiers for Center included the Roughrider 4x400-meter relay, which placed second with a time of 3:31.848. That group is made up of Garrett, JaTarvis Jackson, DeJalen Preston and Julio Martinez. Hudson won the event with a time of 3:30.981.
Martinez placed second in the 400-meters, posting a time of 52.391. Hudson's Brandon Hebert captured first with a 51.724. Jatarius Jackson of Center ran fourth with a 54.093 and DeJalen Preston posted a time of 54.26 for fifth.
Quincy Ratcliff will also be advancing to the Region III meet in the shot put as he placed second with a 45.075. Jareel Holman of Diboll was first with a distance of 45.085. Kevinski Pitts was fifth with a toss of 40.000.
Other Center athletes who placed at the meet included:
Miguel Onate threw the discus 109.08, which was good enough for fifth place. Hubbard was third in the long jump with a leap of 20.06 and will advance.
Jayaveon Standley placed sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 38.1175, Michael Harrison placed fifth in the high jump with a 5.1 and Hubbard jumped 20.06 in the long jump for third, which was good enough for a regional qualification.
The 'Rider 4x100-meter relay foursome of Sudds, Hubbard, Ingram and Garrett placed third with a time of 43.435 and will try to take the next step toward a possible State berth. Kirbyville won the event in 43.235 and Jasper was second at 43.407.
Nathan Sears ran seventh in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 19.379. Teammate Michael Harrison ran into some bad luck when another runner knocked down one of his hurdles just prior to him jumping over it. That caused him to stumble, leaving him with an eighth-place finish in 20.78.
Demetrius Lane placed sixth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles, posting a tie of 43.793.
