Seven members of Center High School golf teams will be heading for the respective Class 3A Region III Tournament later this month after posting scores low enough to advance at the District 18-3A Golf Tournament, which was held over a two-day period on April 4 and on Monday.
Roughrider Nick Fitzgerald claimed top medalist honors at the boys' tournament, shooting a first-round total of 86 and a second-round 79 for a two-round total of 165.
As a team, the 'Riders finished second behind league champion Hudson. Jasper claimed the third spot.
Medalists advanced as well as the top two teams, which means Fitzgerald's teammates will also be heading to the Class 3A Boys Region III Tournament, set for April 20-21 at Village Golf Club in Conroe.
Roughriders who will be making the trip include Collin Mathews, Trey Hughes, Dustin Hughes and Chris Renfro. Also making the trip will be Eric Fairchild, who will go as an alternate for the team, according to CHS Golf Coach Alden Reeves.
Two members of the Lady Rider golf team will also advance to the Region III Tournament as medalists, which will be held on April 18-19 in Conroe. CHS female players advancing will be Klyryssa Gutierrez and Amber Bell.
Other members of the Lady Rider team who competed at the District 18-3A Tournament but were unable to score low enough to advance include Karen Esparza, Ruth Santana and Brandi Gilcrease.
At the girls' district tourney, Hudson won the overall title, followed by Diboll and Center, which took third place.
"The kids did a good job and I was especially proud of the athletes that will be advancing to the Regional Tournament," Reeves stated. "Nick did an exceptional job and hopefully he can improve his score a little more at the regional tournament."
