ZAVALLA -- The Shelbyville Lady Dragons won the 400-meter and 800-meter relays last Thursday to propel themselves to a second place finish at the District 25-1A Track & Field Meet here at Zavalla High School.
The Lady Dragons scored 125 points, which was a distant second to Zavalla, which posted 196. West Sabine scored 94 for third place, West Hardin ran fourth with 44 and Tenaha scored 42 points to finish in fifth place.
Hull-Daisetta scored 37 points to grab the sixth spot in the girls' team standings, while Evadale scored 27 points for seventh, Colmesneil managed 26 points for eighth, ninth went to Sabine Pass, with 13 points and Big Sandy posted four points for 10th.
The top four finishers in each event will advance to the Area track meet, which is scheduled for this Thursday at Zavalla. The Shelbyville will be represented in eight events, while Tenaha will be participating in four - including a pair of relays.
Running Relays
The Shelbyville 4x100-meter relay foursome of Tameria Lathan, Shameria Lathan, Kadeshia Turner and Tiamara McKinney claimed the top spot in the event, posting a time of 51.43. Tenaha's group of Tia Thomas, Okievia Bratchett, Tiara Williams and Courtney Edwards also qualified for Area, with a second-place time of 53.37. West Sabine placed third and Hull-Daisetta was fourth.
The Lady Dragons' 4x200-meter relay also claimed the top spot, running a final time of 1:50.37. Making up the SHS foursome includes Tameria Lathan, Shameria Lathan, Tiamara McKinney and Camory Bolton. The Tenaha group of Thomas, Bratchett, Williams and Edwards came in third behind Zavalla, recording a time of 1:54.81.
In the 4x400-meter relay, Shelbyville placed second behind Zavalla (4:25.64). The Lady Dragon group was made up of Montgomery, Omunique Brooks, Kadeshia Turner and Bolton and posted a time of 4:33.93. West Sabine placed third and Hull-Daisetta was fourth.
Individual Running Events
Emma Walker of Shelbyville placed a close second in the 3200-meter run as she ran the race in 12:59. Rachel Ferguson of West Sabine won the event in 13:53.
Lady Dragon Lovey Brown placed fourth in the 800-meters, posting a time of 2:51.27. Sara Dugat of Zavalla won the race with a time of 2:36.92.
Shelbyville's Tiamara McKinney and Tameria Lathan posted a 1-2 finish in the 100-meters, with McKinney running a 12.74 and Lathan posting a time of 13.18. Tenaha's Courtney Edwards ran third with a 13.19.
Bolton claimed second place in the 400-meters, with a time of 1:06.01. She ran behind Rachel Ferguson of West Sabine, who finished in 1:02.45.
Shelbyville's Kiera Montgomery ran fifth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 56.49. Stephanie Musick of Zavalla took top honors with a 49.62.
Lady Dragon Shameria Lathan won the 200-meter dash with a 26.52, topping Joyslyn Williams of West Sabine, who posted a 26.83.
Shelbyville's Walker won the 1600-meters with a 6:12.87, outlasting Kennady Porter of Evadale, who had a 6:21.62.
Field Events
Tenaha's Bratchett placed fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 31-8.5. Shelby Lee of Zavalla won the event with a 32-10.
Shelbyville's Montgomery placed fourth in the high jump with a height of 4-8, while teammate Kadeshia Turner placed fifth with the same height. Kori Soinget of Evadale posted a 5-4 for top honors.
Courtney Edwards of Tenaha placed fifth in the long jump with a distance of 15-0.5. Shelby Lee of Zavalla won the event with a 15-8.
