BECKVILLE -- The Boys Division of the District 20-1A Track & Field Meet here at Beckville High School was about as close as they come. Timpson entered the competition not having lost a meet all season long, but Alto handed the Bears their first second-place finish of the season as the Yellowjackets outdistanced THS, 147-118.5, last Thursday.
Overton placed third in the boys' team standings with 84 points, Carlisle was a close fourth with 82 and Garrison ran fifth with 67 points.
Cushing posted 51.5 points for sixth place overall, Beckville scored 40 points and ran seventh, New Summerfield came in eighth with 10 points and Martin's Mill was ninth with four points. Mt. Enterprise, Gary and Larue LaPoynor failed to score.
The top four finishers in each event advance to the Area Track Meet set for Wednesday in Hawkins. The Bears qualified for Area in 12 events, with six first-place finishes. Garrison advanced in nine events, with one first-place finish, two second places, three third-place finishes and three fourth-place placements.
Running Relays
The 4x100-meter relay was a dead heat between the Yellowjackets and the Bear foursome of Benjamin Zuniga, Jaylin Rhodes, Lorenzo Young and Rody Paige. After a meeting of the rules committee, Alto was awarded first place and Timpson second, despite both teams running the event in 43.74. Overton placed third and Garrison's foursome of Khiran Arrington, Nathan Burkhalter, Cameron Rodriguez and Logan Clark posted a time of 44.94 for fourth.
The Bear 4x200-meter relay team of Young, Rhodes, Zuniga and Paige recorded the top time of 1:31.46, followed by Alto at 1:31.78. Beckville placed third.
In the 4x400-meter relay, Alto took top honors with a time of 3:35.30, with Overton running second, Carlisle coming in third and the Garrison foursome of Austin Edwards, Hunter Key, Jake Christian and William Rogers running fourth with a time of 3:51.62.
Individual Running Events
The Bears had three finishes in the top six of the 100-meters. Paige captured top honors with a 10.90, while teammate Rhodes claimed third with an 11.20 and Jonathon Allen posted an 11.34 for sixth.
Timpson also put three athletes in the top eight in the 200-meters. Zuniga ran third with a 23.34, while Allen came in sixth with a 23.67 and Shacedric Coleman ran eighth with a 24.23.
The Bears' JaVarcea Bussy won the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.74. Garrison's Chris Feaster came in third with an 18.58 and Timpson's Denorris Blackshear posted a time of 20.02 to run seventh.
Lorenzo Young claimed the title in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 39.80. Young's teammate, JaVarcea Bussy, placed second in the event with a time of 41.53.
In the 800-meters, Garrison's Austin Edwards took the top spot with a time of 2:07.74, while Martin Leon of Timpson was seventh with a 2:21.39.
Cade Kendrick of Garrison ran eighth in the 1600-meters, with John Duffin of Cushing winning the event in 5:04.05.
Garrison's Cade Kendrick posted a time of 12:18.34 to place fourth in the 3200-meters. Carlisle's Adam Sanchez won the event in 11:40.58.
Field Events
Timpson's Lorenzo Young had little trouble winning the long jump with a leap of 20-0.25. He also won the high jump with a 5-10. Bussy was fourth in the high jump with a 5-6.
Bussy placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 37-9.50. William Rogers of Garrison placed sixth with a 36-2.
Garrison's Chris Feaster and Jesse Garcia placed second and third, respectively, in the pole vault. Feaster cleared 10-0, with Garcia reaching 9-0.
Josh Williams of Garrison placed third in the shot put with a distance of 44-10 and second in the discus with a 127-11. Josh Robinson of the Bulldogs was fifth in the discus with a 117-8.
