The Center Roughrider varsity and junior varsity track teams had stellar performances last Thursday as the varsity took top honors and the JV placed third at the Newton Eagle Relays.
The CHS varsity squad scored 111 points to claim first place by 24 points, with Jasper running second with 87 points. Newton placed third with 86.5 points, Hemphill was fourth with 62.5 and Kirbyville was a close fifth with 62 points.
Other team finishers in the varsity division included Diboll placing sixth with 61 points; Woodville placed seventh with 53.5 points; San Augustine ran eighth with 25.5 points; West Sabine was ninth with 22 points; Deweyville claimed tenth with 16 points; Shelbyville was eleventh with 15 points; and Burkeville was twelfth with 12 points.
In the field events, Ty Hubbard placed fifth in the long jump, while Jayaveon Standley was sixth in the event. Two 'Riders posted in the top three spots in the shot put as Quincy Ratcliff placed second and Kevinski Pitts was fifth overall.
In the relay events, the Roughrider 4x100-meter relay foursome of Tre Sudds, Ty Hubbard, K.J. Garrett and Standley ran second in the event. In the 4x200-meter relay, Garrett, Sudds, Hubbard and Se'Ryan Netherly ran second. In the 4x400-meter relay, Center's Garrett, Demetrius Lane, Julio Martinez and Jalen Preston took top honors.
Lane sprinted to a first-place finish in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles, while Hubbard won the 200-meter dash and Standley posted the fourth-best finish.
In the 1600-meter run, Trey Byrnes placed second and Cody Oswalt ran fourth. Byrnes placed third in the 3200-meter run, with Oswalt coming in fourth in the event.
Junior Varsity Division
The Center junior varsity boys scored 104 points, placing third behind Kirbyville (132 points) and Lufkin (128) in the overall competition. Newton placed a distant fourth with 66 points and Woodville was fifth with 63 points.
Other JV team finishers included: Diboll finishing sixth, 44 points; Jasper, seventh, 36 points; Hemphill, eighth, 29 points; San Augustine, ninth, nine points; Deweyville, 10th, four points; and Shelbyville, 11th, two points.
In the relays, the CHS 4x100-meter relay foursome of Trey Johnson, Shaquille Ingram, Kiounis Williams and Augustine Johnson took top honors, while the 4x200-meter relay team of Johnson, Ingram, Williams and Johnson placed second. The 4x400-meter relay team of Johnson, Kyle Clinton, Nathan Sears and Mark Hamilton placed fourth.
In the field events, Johnson finished sixth in the long jump and Josh Martin placed sixth in the discus. Demetrius Lane placed second in the triple jump, while Trey Johnson posted the fifth-best finish.
In the distance running events, Brian Ruiz won the 3200-meter and 1600-meter run. Jordan Long ran sixth in the 1600-meter event. Kyle Clinton ran second in the 800-meter run.
Nathan Sears placed third in the 100-meter high hurdles and sixth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles.
Ingram ran fifth in the 200-meter dash and Williams won the 100-meter dash.
