While their head coach was at the hospital to be with his wife as she delivered their first child, the Center Lady Rider soccer team took care of business in his absence as they slammed Mount Pleasant, 4-0, at Roughrider Stadium last Friday.
The victory was the Lady Riders' second win and second consecutive shutout since opening the year with three consecutive setbacks at the Palestine Tournament. Center, which is now 2-3 on the year, will return to action tonight (Friday) when they battle Marshall in their final home nondistrict matchup. The competition will start at 6 p.m. at Roughrider Stadium.
Following tonight's match, the Lady Riders will travel to Tatum on Tuesday and Carthage next Friday before kicking off District 35-4A play on Feb. 8 against Hudson at home.
Norma Ruiz scored a pair of goals for Center against Mount Pleasant, while Maria Medrano added one of her own. The Lady Rider defense did the rest, recording the shutout.
Meanwhile, CHS Head Coach Jonathan Vick's wife Nina was delivering a healthy baby boy - named Landon Riley - at the hospital.
"It was a crazy night, but with great results on both counts," Vick stated later. "I'm proud of the girls for going out and playing well once again. We're continuing to play well on defense, which has been the strong point of our team. I hope we can continue to build off these last two shutouts and get better as we get closer to district play."
