CENTER -- The Center junior varsity boys and girls cross country teams took advantage of the home course Saturday as they breezed to the championships in their respective divisions of the 2010 Rider Invitational Cross Country Meet held here on the CHS campus.
The 'Rider junior varsity boys coasted to the championship with a low of 16 points. West Sabine was a distant second with 62 points and Gary placed third with 86 points.
The Lady Riders also cruised to the win, posting just 25 points. Shelbyville was the clear-cut second-place finisher with 63 points, Zavalla was a distant third with 103 and Broaddus ran fourth with 127 points. West Sabine posted 128 points for fifth and Tenaha was sixth with 178 points.
"The kids did a great job today," said Center Head Cross Country Coach Donna Shannon after the competition. "These kids know the course, which is really brutal, and they really took advantage of running at home today. We turned this course into an advantage for us because the kids knew what to expect coming in. All the kids did a great job."
Shannon said by continually training on a tough course, it will better prepare her runners for the upcoming district competition next month.
"For us, working on these hills really strengthens us because our district course is really flat and fast," she explained. "We're building our strength and working on our speed and hopefully by district we'll be seeing some good things."
