Fall athletes gearing up for 2010 run

The 'dog days' of August are here and that means high school athletes are returning to the gridiron, volleyball courts and cross country trails with high expectations of district and possibly State titles as they prepared for their upcoming season openers this month.
Football squads hit the ground running on Monday morning as coaches and trainers tried to figure out ways to beat the heat of summer, while keeping their players as fresh as possible so fatigue won't limit the amount of time constructive teaching can be done.
Volleyball teams won't have long to get ready for the upcoming season. Despite being inside, coaches must get a lot of instruction completed in a short amount of time.
ShelbyCountySports.com is expanding its coverage and changing its name this fall. Work on a redesign of our website is currently underway and changes can be seen throughout this month. The changes are anticipated to be fully completed by the time football season begins on August 26.
The new name of our site is PineyWoodsSports.com as we take in schools outside Shelby County in our umbrella of coverage - hence the need for a name change. But don't worry, you can still access the site by using the URL www.shelbycountysports.com; so if you have it in your favorites, you don't need to make a change. We'll have more on the changes in the upcoming days and weeks.
In addition to the five Shelby County school districts - Center, Joaquin, Shelbyville, Tenaha and Timpson - we will be adding coverage of four additional schools this year. Last year we had as many as 2,455 page hits per day and we expect more with a growing fan base in the 2010-11 school year. We will now be covering Carthage, Gary, Garrison and Mount Enterprise school districts in our coverage area as well. Please pass the word as we have a need to get as many viewers as possible to keep the site free to readers.

If you hover your mouse over the "Standings" link, you will see we will be tracking nine football districts this fall. The standings have already been set up, with the complete schedule of the districts for the 2010 season listed.
Piney Woods Football
High school football teams in the Piney Woods are gearing more toward longer practices once per day or two short practices in either the morning or evening this fall. Carthage, Joaquin, Mount Enterprise, Shelbyville, Tenaha and Timpson will be working out in the mornings, while Center and Garrison have scheduled evening practice sessions. Center has scheduled an intrasquad scrimmage this Saturday at 11 a.m. on the CHS practice field. The Roughriders are coming off an 8-4 campaign a year ago and the first playoff appearance since 2004.
All area football teams will begin padded workouts on Friday of this week, with scrimmage action beginning Saturday, Aug. 14. The scrimmage schedule includes: Carthage at Kilgore, time TBA; Center at Palestine, 10 a.m.; Garrison at Joaquin, 10 a.m.; Shelbyville vs. Colmesneil/Koonce at Colmesneil, 10 a.m.; Carlisle at Mount Enterprise, 10 a.m.; Sabine at Tenaha, 10 a.m.; Lovelady at Timpson, 10 a.m. (See schedule below)
Piney Woods Volleyball
Carthage, Center, Gary and Timpson will begin volleyball scrimmages this week. Gary is scheduled to visit West Rusk at 2 p.m. Friday, while Carthage hosts a scrimmage at home at 9 a.m.
Center will host a volleyball scrimmage Saturday, although a time has yet to be determined. Carthage will be at home for a scrimmage at 10 a.m.
Carthage will open the 2010 volleyball season on Tuesday, Aug. 10, when the Lady Bulldogs (9th,JV,V) travel to John Tyler for a 4:30 p.m. match.
Piney Woods Cross Country
Center Head Cross Country Coach Donna Shannon has announced that her high school athletes will begin workouts on Friday with a midnight run. She said she's looking for a large turnout for her 12 a.m. workout to kick off a fall season.
Center returns almost all of its runners back from a year ago as the program continues to grow.
