CENTER -- Not only was the temperature hot, but the competition was as well as 72 East Texas golfers competed for pride and to raise money Saturday at the 18th Annual Darren Wilson Golf Classic held here at the Center Country Club.
The J.B. Raymond team captured top honors in the Gross Score competition, shooting a 54, topping the second-place Glenn Cordray team, which finished the one-day tourney with a 56. The J.B. Raymond team was made up of Raymond, Justin Riggs, Adam Ray, Shane Ray, Jason Sample and Joe Anderson. The Glenn Cordray team was made up of Cordray, Davis Foster, Jerry Cassell, Michael Cassell and Matt Cassell.
The Joe (Pro) Whittlesey team - made up of Whittlesey, John Harbison, Britt Harbison, Billy Thompson, Kyle Bush and Brett Scarber - was a close third with a 57 and the Tanner Peace team - consisting of Peace, Kenneth Jones, Joel Covington, Johnny Covington, James Hockenberry and Ryan Keele - tied the Larry Horn team - made up of Horn, Scott Eastland, Mark Fannin, Darrell Koonce, Richard Pinkston and Jordan Horn - for the fourth spot as each group shot a 58.
In the Net Score competition, the determination of a winner was even closer as the Rodney Hale team and the Larry Horn team had to go to a tie-breaker to determine the victor of the charity event. Both team shot a 43 in the 18-hole affair, so official began comparing scores from the 14th hole to determine the winner.
It wasn't until the 17th hole that there was a different score between the two team as the Rodney Hale team shot a three and the Larry Horn team only managed a par-4 on the hole. That gave the Hale team the victory. The Hale team was made up of Hale, Todd Bush, Steve Dinnerville, Max Malone, Mark Atkerson, Andy Dennard and Prentis Hay, Jr.
The J.B. Raymond team, the Wil Blackshear team - made up of Blackshear, Ryan Fitzgerald, Clay Ihlo, Nic Fitzgerald, Collin Mathews, Roy Blackshear and Phillip Holt - and the Tanner Peace team each tied for third with identical 44 scores, while the Glenn Cordray team placed sixth with a 45 and the Charles Barr team placed seventh with a 47. The Charles Barr team consisted of Barr, Blake Barr, Steve Barr, Harry Murdock, Jr., Hay Murdock, David Shields and Greg Luman.
All the money raised from entry fees, hole sponsors and from the silent auction will go into the Darren Wilson Scholarship Fund. In the past 17 years over $100,000 has been raised by the event.
Other Gross Score finishers included the Stacy Pledger team - consisting of Pledger, Will Lloyd, John Paul Packard, Marcus Nix and Josh Sowell - placing sixth with a 59, followed by the Rodney Hale team and Wil Blackshear team tying for seventh with identical scores of 60.
The Shelby Savings Bank team, consisting of Leroy Newman, Ed Johnson, Tyler Jackson, Jeremy Fenley, Leon Dykes, Charles Rushing and A.W. Bolen, placing ninth with a 64, along with the Charles Barr team. The James Wilson team, made up of Wilson, Tom Hairgrove, Jr., Brent Gregston, Jody Cooper, Neal Stevenson, Ric Lee, Tyler Patterson and Samson Davey, coming in 11th with a one-day total of 67.
Other Net Score finishers included The Joe Whittlesey placing eighth with a 48, the James Wilson team scored a 49 for ninth and the Stacy Pledger team and the Shelby Savings Bank team tying for 10th with scores of 50.
In the individual recognition honors, Clay Ihlo had the Longest Drive, while Davis Foster was Closest to the Pin on Hole #3 and Ryan Keele was Closest to the Pine on Hole #6.
