Timpson high school athletes had their share of highlights during the 2009-10 school year. For their efforts on the field and court, around the track and in the classroom, they were recognized at the annual Timpson High School All-Sports Banquet held at First Baptist Church last week.
Seniors Daylon Hooper and Tan Eaden were both honored for their efforts as they received the top honors for Male and Female Athlete of the Year.
Hooper was a standout in football, basketball and track this school year, while Eaden was an elite competitor in volleyball, basketball and track for the Lady Bears.
Hooper has signed a National Letter of Intent this spring to continue his education and compete in basketball and run track at Lon Morris College in Jacksonville. He was Honorable Mention All-District 19-1A in football as a receiver and all-district in basketball.
Hooper and the Timpson's 4x400-meter relay team advanced to the Class 1A Region III Track & Field Meet, placing third in the finals and just missing a trip to Austin.
Another Timpson athlete who will be heading to the gridiron this fall and joining Hooper at Lon Morris College is Kenneth Jackson, a standout defensive end for the Bears in 2009.
Eaden was part of the Lady Bear 4x100-meter relay team that qualified for the State Track & Field Meet last month. The foursome that also included LaToya Cartwright, Shanee Adams and Jakelia Caraway ran the sixth-best time in the state with a 51.38 at the Austin competition.
Eaden was also an Academic All-District athlete in volleyball and a Second-Team All-District athlete in basketball.
A three-time state qualifier in track and field, Cameron Courtney was recognized for his efforts on the track this year, advancing to the State Track & Field Meet in the 1,600-meters and 800 meters.
Courtney, who signed a National Letter of Intent this week to compete in the Southland Conference at University of Texas at San Antonio, placed second in the mile competition at Austin, bettering his qualifying time by almost 14 seconds. He missed capturing the gold medal by 35-hundredths of a second, running the event in 4:24.55.
Courtney was also a strong finisher in the 800-meters, placing third in the event with a blistering 1:56.37. It was his second consecutive trip to State in the 800-meters. In 2009 he placed fifth at State, posting a time of 1:59.79.
Two Timpson athletes who were honored not only for their performances against competition, but also for their efforts in the classroom were E.J. Goodrum and Macy Nix. The pair received recognition at the fete as the Male and Female Academic Athletes of the Year by the school.
Nix, a senior, was named Academic All-District in volleyball and Academic All-State. She was also a Female Scholar Athlete.
Goodrum was an All-District 19-1A Honorable Mention on the Timpson defensive line.
Bear freshman Lorenzo Young was a standout in football, as well as basketball and track. He was the All-District 19-1A Defensive Freshman of the Year in the league and was named the Timpson Freshman Athlete of the Year.
Young was part of the Bear 4x400-meter relay team that placed third at the Class 1A Region III Meet. He was also part of the 4x200-meter relay team that placed fifth at the Region III meet.
