Golfers from the East Texas area and beyond will converge on the Center Country Club on Saturday to help raise money for a worthy cause as the 18th Annual Darren Wilson Golf Classic takes place in Shelby County.

According to tournament organizer Lola Wilson, who is the mother of the late Darren Wilson, the annual tournament has raised over $100,000 in the past 17 years, which has gone to the Darren Wilson Scholarship Fund, which benefits area high school students to further their college educations.

In addition to the 18-hole golf tourney, there will also be a large silent auction during the day-long event, with proceeds going toward the scholarship fund as well.

"This year's event promises to be fun not only for the golfers but for the entire family," Wilson stated concerning the event. "Please come and join us for a full day of fun, good food and fellowship.

"I also urge participants to sign up early to ensure a spot in the tournament."

Darren Wilson was a Center resident who died at a young age in an automobile accident. His passion for golf and the family wish to not only remember Wilson, but to assist in other area students to have the ability to further their education through the scholarship fund, is the reason for the event's inception, Wilson stated.

The format for the tournament will be a six-man scramble, with an entry fee of $60 per player. Wilson said this fee covers green fees and an eight-iron shot off one of the par-5 holes. Lunch will be served by the Shelby County Cookers before the tournament kicks off.
