The Roarin’ Band from Tiger Land earned the coveted UIL Sweepstakes Award on Wednesday of this week. This was achieved by earning first division ratings in Concert and Sightreading, along with a first division in marching (which was earned in October).

The Tiger Band has been a sweepstakes band during three of the last four years.

The Region 21 Class 1A-3A Concert and Sightreading Contest was held at Rusk High School on Wednesday and Thrusday, April 21-22.  The concert performances were judged by Brandon Brewer (Princeton), Carl Idlebird ( Somerville ), and John Young (Wills Point).  The sightreading judges were Stacy Gist (Hutto), George Strickland ( Austin ), and Glenn Wells ( Longview , Pine Tree).  A few of the judge’s comments were as follows:

  • “Good individual sounds from all sections and a nice ensemble sound.”
  • “Good, mature, characteristic sounds throughout the performance.”
  • “Dynamic contrasts are obvious and effective.”
  • “You have done an outstanding job of working out your parts.”
  • “It is obvious that each and every one of you accepts the responsibility to be well prepared.”
  • “Students perform artistically, with the appropriate musical style on all selections.”
  • “There is obviously some great teaching to great students here!”

Tenaha ISD would like to congratulate the band and its directors Rhonda Cates, Eric Sanford, and Kasi Trent.  We are so proud of the Tiger Band for placing fourth in the UIL State Marching Contest and for bringing home another Sweepstakes trophy!  What a year!
