T&F: Dragon elite heading for Regional Meet

Nine members of the Shelbyville Dragon and Lady Dragon track teams qualified for the Class 2A Region III Track & Field in Whitehouse on May 3-4 as they will advance in four girls' and five boys' events after a strong performance at the District 22-2A Track & Field Meet in Newton last week.

Athletes who finished in the top three in each event will advance to the Region III Meet.

In the varsity boys running events, Brandon Gillespie qualified for the Regional Meet in two events, placing third in the 200-meter dash, while advancing in the triple jump.

Jeffery Cagle placed second in the 800-meter run to move on to Regional, as did Jestin Brown, who placed third in the 100-meter dash.

Dragon Chris Thompson placed second in the shot put to move to the next meet.

Walter Hill ran fourth in the 400-meter dash, but just missed advancing to the Regional Meet.

In the varsity girls field events, Tameria Lathan placed fifth in the long jump, Amanda Sellman posted a fourth-place finish in the high jump and Kelsi Griffin was sixth in the shot put at district.

The Lady Dragon 400-meter relay foursome of Shameria Lathan, Tameria Lathan, Shenequa Lathan and Tiamara McKinney posted a second-place finish at the league meet, while the 800-meter relay foursome of Shameria Lathan, Tameria Lathan, Tiamara McKinney and Camory Bolton was nosed out from Regional with a fourth-place finish.

In the 100-meter dash, Tiamara McKinney placed second and Shenequa Lathan was close behind in the third spot as both girls advanced to Regional. Lady Dragon Tameria Lathan came in fifth.

Bolton ran third in the 400-meter dash, while Kiera Montgomery ran fifth in the 100-meter hurdles and fourth in the 300-meter hurdles. Shameria Lathan came in third in the 200-meter dash.

The Lady Dragon 1600-meter relay placed sixth. Making up the foursome was Summer Williams, Ashley Sellman, Kadeshia Turner and Kiera Montgomery.

In the junior varsity boys’ field events, Dillion Brown won the discus, while James Bradford placed fourth. Tyler West placed third in the pole vault, Tyler Adams came in second in the high jump, while Caleb Stracener placed fourth in the long jump.

Shelbyville's Blake Waller placed second in the 3200-meter run, while teammate Tyler West came in sixth. Cody Greer ran sixth in the 800-meter run.

The Dragon JV 400-meter relay won the event. The foursome was made up of Nino Cartwright, Marshane Caraway, Dillion Brown and Blaine Consford. The SHS 800-meter relay team of Marshane Caraway, Blaine Consford, Caleb Stracener and Ryan Vaughn paced third.

In the 100-meter dash, Nine Cartwright ran second and Caleb Helander posted the sixth-best finish. Dillion Brown placed third in the 200-meter dash. In the 400-meter dash, Ryan Vaughn ran third, James Bradford finished fifth and Logan Barbee placed sixth.
