After claiming third spot in the district track meet a week ago, the Timpson Lady Bears were determined to better that performance at the Class 1A Area Track & Field Meet held Wednesday and Thursday at Bulldog Stadium in Carthage. The Lady Bears did just that, scoring 88 points to outdistance second-place Alto, which scored 76.
The top four finishers in each event of the Area Meet will advance to the Class 1A Region III Track & Field Meet, which is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, May 3-4, at Palestine High School. All individual results from Thursday's meet were not immediately available and will be released in the next several days, according to meet officials.
In addition to the top finish by Timpson, another Shelby County girls' squad placed in the top five overall as the Tenaha Lady Tigers scored 50 points to take the fifth spot. Cushing scored 72 points to grab the third spot, while Beckville was close behind with 63 points and came in fourth.
In the boys' division, the Timpson Bears scored 79 points, which was good enough to place second overall. Alto took top honors as the Yellowjackets scored 105 points. Overton placed third with 77 points, Carlisle tallied 56 points and secured fourth, while Tenaha placed fifth with 36 points to round out the top five.
Some of the highlights of the meet in the girls' division included the Tenaha 800-meter relay taking top honors. The foursome of Tia Thomas, Okievia Bratchett, Whitney Jackson and Courtney Edwards posted the best time in the event.
Timpson took first place in the 400-meter relay. Members of the Lady Bears that made up that foursome included Latoya Cartwright, Tan Eaden, Shanee Adams and Jakelia Caraway.
Timpson Lady Bear Kirsten Kimzey placed second in the 1600 meter run.
On the boys' side, Timpson's Cameron Courtney easily outdistanced the competition in the 1600-meter run and the 800-meter run. The Bears' Jaylin Rhodes finished fourth in the 100-meter dash.
