BECKVILLE -- Speed was at a premium at the District 23-1A Track and Field Meet held Wednesday and Thursday here at Beauchamp Stadium on the campus of Beckville High School. The Alto Yellowjackets and Beckville Ladycats were victorious in their respective varsity divisions, while the Timpson Bears and Lady Bears both placed third in their divisions.
Alto's Yellowjackets won the varsity boys' division, easily outdistancing the field with 185 points. Overton was second with 125 points, the Timpson Bears were a close third with 122 points, Carlisle scored 72.5 points for fourth and Tenaha placed fifth with 42 points.
The New Summerfield boys track team placed sixth with 38 points, while Joaquin was seventh with 16 points, Beckville scored 13 points for eighth, Cushing was ninth with 10 points and Mount Enterprise scored 3.5 points and posted the 11th-best total.
In the girls' division, host-team Beckville scored 100 points to narrowly defeat second-place Alto, which tallied 99 points. Timpson captured third place with 92 points, and Tenaha and Cushing tied for the fourth spot with 76 points.
Overton's Lady Mustangs scored 65 points and placed sixth at the meet, while Joaquin scored 56 points for seventh, Mount Enterprise placed eighth with 43 and Carlisle scored 10 points for the ninth spot.
Timpson ran away with the junior varsity boys division, scoring 175 points. Tenaha was a distant second with 57 points, while Overton placed third with 48 points, Alto was fourth with 44 points, Mount Enterprise scored 18 points for fifth and Cushing and Martinsville each scored 14 points and tied for the sixth spot.
Complete individual results of the meet were not available at the time this story was published. They will be released sometime Friday, according to Beckville ISD officials.
Some of the varsity boys' early results included Timpson's Rody Paige taking top honors in the 100 meters with a time of 11.02; the Bear 400-meter relay team posting a time of 44.47 for second place and Tenaha running fourth with a 44.86; Timpson's Cameron Courtney winning the 800 meters and the 1,600 meters; Timpson's Warren Gray placing third in the 300-meter hurdles; and Victor Johnson of Tenaha winning the 200 meter dash with a 22.71.
Some of the varsity girls' early results included the Tenaha 400-meter relay foursome taking top honors with a time of 52.69; Joaquin's Whitney Vaughn placing third in the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 10.15; Amber Evans of Tenaha placing second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.03 and Lady Ram Olivia Worsham a close third with an 18.15; and Worsham coming in second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 52.58.
The top four finishers in each event qualify for the Area Track & FieldMeet,which is scheduled for next Thursday, April 15, at Carthage High School.
