CENTER -- Shelby County track teams from Center, Timpson and Shelbyville were among a tough field of competitors as 13 schools converged here at Roughrider Stadium Thursday afternoon for the 2010 Center Rider Relays. Atlanta gained varsity boys supremacy, outdistancing its nearest competitor by a whopping 93 points, while the Palestine varsity girls outscored second-place Atlanta 164-129 to win its division. Atlanta also won the junior varsity boys' division.

The Center varsity boys placed third in the overall competition, scoring 79 points. The Roughriders finished behind second-place Palestine, which scored 85 points. Hudson came in fourth with 74, District 18-3A competitor Rusk placed fifth with 58 and Timpson was sixth with 42 points. Shelbyville scored 13 points to place 10th.

In the varsity girls division, Center posted 28 points to finish fifth. Hudson was the third-place squad with 94 points, while Diboll scored 87 for fourth and Rusk had 26 and posted the sixth-best finish. The Shelbyville Lady Dragons scored 22 points to place seventh, San Augustine was eighth with 19 points and Timpson claimed the ninth spot with 18 points.

San Augustine was a strong second in the junior varsity boys' division, scoring 83 points. Center's jayvee was third with 71 points, while Palestine placed fourth with 63 points and Ozen had 62 points for the fifth spot. Hudson had the sixth-best score with 57 points, followed by Timpson with 40.

Of the Shelby County varsity boys’ teams competing, Center claimed three first-place finishes, while Timpson posted one. The 'Riders were second in two events, while the Bears claimed one runner-up spot. Center also had a third-place finish, while Shelbyville took two.

In the field events, Center's Criswell leaped 39'4" in the triple jump, which was good enough for sixth place. Center's Bolton took sixth in the shot put with a throw of 43'5".

Roughrider J'Von Jones won the high jump with a height of 6'2". Skinner of Rusk also cleared 6'2", but Jones did it in fewer jumps. Michael Harrison of Center posted the fourth-best height with a 5'8".

Center's Grant Belrose claimed the pole vault competition with a height of 13'0". Rabe of Atlanta was second at 12'6".

In the running events, Timpson's Cameron Courtney won the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:14.48. He was second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.39. The Center 400-meter relay team placed second, running a 43.1. Palestine won the event with a time of 42.9.

Shelbyville's Jeffrey Cagle posted a sixth-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:12.6., while the Center 800-meter relay ran third with a 1:31.11 and Timpson was fourth at 1:34.9.

Center's Harrison was fifth in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 17.8. In the 300-meter hurdles, Brown of Center posted a 42.17, which gave him second, while Harrison claimed the sixth spot with a 46.9.

Jestin Brown of Shelbyville ran an 11.13 in the 100-meters for the third-best time. Simon of Palestine was first with a 10.29 and Lafayette of Atlanta posted a 10.99 for second. Jeremy Small of the 'Riders was fourth at 11.21 and Jones ran an 11.34, which gave him the sixth spot.

In the 200-meter sprint, Center's Hubbard claimed top honors with a 23.1, while Brown of Shelbyville ran third with a 23.42 and Tre Sudds of Center posted a time of 24.11 and took sixth place.

The Timpson 1,600-meter relay team ran fourth with a time of 3:39. Atlanta won the competition with a 3:28.25, followed by Ozen with a 3:34.4 and Hudson with a 3:35.63.

Varsity Girls
In running events, Center and Shelbyville both claimed one first-place finish in the varsity girls' competition. Shelbyville's Camory Bolton won the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.9, easily outdistancing Talancon of Rusk, who ran a 1:09.7.

O'Mattie Swindle of Center captured the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.6. Hall of Center was second at 27.28, while Corimer of Atlanta came in third with a 27.38, Bolton of Shelbyville was fourth at 27.73, Cartwright of Timpson ran fifth with a 28.29 and Murry of Center placed sixth with a 28.55.

The Center 400-meter relay foursome placed third with a 51.1. Atlanta took top honors with a 49.9 and Palestine ran a close second at 50.85. Timpson posted the fifth-best time with a 51.7 and Shelbyville placed sixth with a 51.81.

Center's Harless placed sixth in the 800-meter run with a 2:42, while the Shelbyville 800-meter relay team placed fifth (1:52.69) and Center was sixth (1:56.5).

Lady Bear Jakelia Caraway posted the second-best time in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.81. McGray of Atlanta won the event with a 12.64.

Center's 1,600-meter relay ran sixth with a 4:56.00. Palestine won the event with a 4:28.38.

The field events saw Tan Eaden of Timpson place fourth in the long jump with a distance of 15'2". Lady Rider Ashley Sigler leaped 29'6" in the triple jump and claimed the fifth spot. Amanda Sellman of Shelbyville cleared 4'8" in the high jump and placed fifth.
