The Center High School tennis team posted a 14th place showing this past weekend at the Class 3A Team Tennis State Tournament held in San Marcos.
After capturing the Region III championship last week, the Riders needed four straight wins to capture a State title as they competed against 15 of the best the state has to offer.
At the state tournament, all 16 places at the State tournament were played out, but a team must go 4-0 to capture the title, a first round setback means a team can only compete for places 9th through 16. Center took on Wharton High School in the first round on Friday morning and dropped a 10-0 decision.
On Friday afternoon, the Roughriders came back hoping to assure themselves a spot in places 9th through 12th, but Center came out on the short end of a hard-fought 10-8 loss to Sweetwater High School in the Quarterfinal round.
Not to be denied, the Riders continued to battled the competition on Saturday, blanking Zapata High School 10-0 to assure themselves no worse than a 14th place in the state of Texas. Then, competing against nemesis Van High School, the two schools went toe-to-toe before Van pulled out a 10-8 win, taking the 13th spot and leaving Center as the 14th-best Class 3A team tennis squad in the state.
