From basketball warm-ups and playoffs to softball and baseball scrimmages to powerlifting, it will be a busy week ahead for Shelby County schools and area colleges.

This past weekend featured some exciting girls hoop action at the Tenaha Special Events Center when THS hosted the Tyler Chapter of Officials Girls Playoff Preview with four exciting games. Some of the best girls' talent in East Texas was played in the eight-team event.

Now girls’ teams will begin playoff action. Tenaha will host a pair of Class 3A Bi-District playoff games on Tuesday night when Diboll takes on Spring Hill at 6 p.m. in the SEC, followed by Tatum taking on Central at 7:30 p.m.

The Tenaha Lady Tigers, who are the lone female representatives in the girls’ state playoffs from Shelby County, will receive a bye on Tuesday night and open the Class 1A Division I playoffs against the winner of Tuesday's West Sabine-Grapeland game. That Area contest will most likely be played on Friday. The particulars will be finalized after Tuesday's bi-district matchup.

Boys Basketball
Shelby County boys’ basketball teams will wind down their seasons early this week, and Center and Tenaha squads will be in warm-up action in Tenaha this weekend.

The Center Roughriders, winners of 14 straight, will be out to wrap-up to the outright District 18-3A championship tonight (Monday) when they make up Friday's postponed game against Huntington on the road at 7:30 p.m. The 'Riders, who have already clinched the top representative spot in the Class 3A playoffs from 18-3A and a first-round bye because they have swept the only team that could possibly tie them - Hudson - with two games remaining.

Center (18-6, 12-0) will then host Jasper on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. on senior night to close out the regular season. The Roughriders, who broke into the TABC Top 25 last week at No.25, won't open the playoffs until the end of next week in Class 3A Area play. CHS will participate in the Tyler Chapter of Officials Boys Playoff Preview in Tenaha on Saturday of this week. The Roughriders are set to face Sabine Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the SEC. The rest of the weekend's schedule won't be announced until Wednesday.

The No.8-ranked Tenaha Tigers (20-4, 11-0), winners of 11 straight and 15 of their last 16 games, captured the District 22-1A championship Friday night with an 88-51 win over Joaquin. The Tigers will close out the regular season in the Special Events Center tonight (Monday) against Cushing at 6 p.m.

Tenaha will then host part of the Playoff Preview this weekend. Officials say there could be games in the SEC on both Friday and Saturday, depending on how many teams are participating. The schedule will be announced on Wednesday.

The Shelbyville Dragons (9-16, 0-9) will close out the 2009-10 campaign Tuesday night in Woodville at 6 p.m.

Timpson's Bears (11-13, 5-6) won be going to the playoffs, but they can determine the finish for second and third in the District 22-1A race when they host Mount Enterprise tonight (Monday) at 6 p.m. No.24-ranked Mount Enterprise (16-12, 8-3) is tied with New Summerfield (18-12, 8-3) for second place heading into the final game of the regular season. New Summerfield will travel to Gary (3-23, 1-10) Tuesday night. If Mount Enterprise and New Summerfield finish in a tie for second, they will either play a one-game playoff or flip a coin to see which team will be the second- and third-place representatives in the league.

High School Baseball
There should be some high school baseball scrimmages this week as teams put in final preparations for the 2010 season.

Today's (Monday) Mount Enterprise-Shelbyville varsity scrimmage has been cancelled, as has the Timpson-Slocum scrimmage. But the Dragon junior varsity is scheduled to host the Center junior varsity and the Timpson junior varsity at 5 p.m.

Center is set to host JV and varsity scrimmages against Tatum on Tuesday (4:30/7 p.m.) and Joaquin is scheduled to travel to Beckville (4:30/7 p.m.) for two scrimmages. Timpson's varsity will host Slocum on Thursday (5 p.m.) and then travel to Leggett on Friday (3 p.m.) for a pair of scrimmages, just to name a few.

High School Softball
After scrimmages early in the week, the regular season of softball will get underway later this week when Center and Joaquin participate in the Hudson Softball Tournament Thursday through Saturday.

Timpson's home softball scrimmage slated for today (Monday) has been postponed until Thursday (5 p.m.) against Mount Enterprise as wet field conditions forced the delay.

The Center Lady Rider softball team will be at Corrigan on Tuesday (5 p.m.), while Joaquin's Lady Rams will visit Alto (6 p.m.) and the Shelbyville Lady Dragons will be at Brookeland (5:30 p.m.), field conditions permitting.

Powerlifting
The snow and icy weather last week forced the postponement of the Diboll Powerlifting Meet. It will be held this Thursday, with Center and Shelbyville both participating.

On Saturday, Center powerlifters will be at the Chapel Hill Meet, while Shelbyville lifters will compete at the Bullard Meet.

High School Soccer
The Center Roughrider and Lady Rider soccer teams will try to climb back into their respective District 35-4A races this week with a pair of games.

The 'Riders will be at home Tuesday night to take on defending champ Nacogdoches (5:30/7 p.m.), while the Lady Riders visit the Lady Dragons (6 p.m.). On Friday, the Roughriders will host Diboll (5:30/7 p.m.), the Lady Riders visit the Ladyjacks (6 p.m.).

Tenaha's Tigers and Lady Tigers will be at Spring Hill tonight (Monday), with the girls starting at 5 p.m. and the boys playing immediately afterwards.

College Basketball
There will be plenty of college basketball this week in and around Shelby County. The Panola College Fillies and Ponies will host Trinity Valley Wednesday in the Arthur Johnson Gymnasium. The Fillies will tip off at 5:30 p.m. and the Ponies will take to the court at 7:30 p.m.

The Fillies (2 p.m.) and Ponies (4 p.m.) will play at Paris Junior College on Saturday.

The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks will host Southeastern Louisiana (6 p.m.) Saturday in a Southland Conference matchup. The Lumberjacks will be on the road to take on the Lions (6 p.m.)
