TENAHA -- District 22-1A (D-II) champion Saltillo took advantage of a cold-shooting Cayuga squad during the second and third quarters as the Lady Lions erased a two-point deficit after the opening period and raced to a 45-29 victory over Cayuga in the opening game of the Tyler Chapter of Officials Girls Playoff Preview held Saturday afternoon here in the Special Events Center.
Saltillo underclassman Kimber Thompson (junior) and Victoria Stretcher (freshmen) led the offensive attack for the Lady Lions (26-5) as they combined for 34 of the team's 45 points Thompson knocked down 10 first-half points and finished with a game-high 19. Stretcher scored 11 in the first half and chipped in 15 for the game.
Other scorers for Saltillo included junior Brooke Lane with nine points and freshman Karli Brewer with two points.
A pair of seniors led the Ladycats of Cayuga (19-11). Chelsea Brown hit three 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 11 points. Lexus Mack added six first-quarter points to drop in 10 for the game. Freshman Shawnta Knox added six points to the attack, while senior Chantel Walker scored two.
Mack and Brown each scored six points in the first quarter for the Ladycats as they took a 14-12 lead after the opening period. But Stretcher scored six and Lane and Thompson dropped in five apiece for Saltillo in the second quarter as the Lady Lions outscored Cayuga 18-0 to assume a commanding 30-14 lead at the half.
Thompson added six more points in the third quarter as Saltillo stretched the lead to 40-18 and the Lady Lions coasted from there.
