CENTER, Tx -- The Shelbyville Dragon 9-10 year-old all-stars almost let their first-round contest against Pineland get away from them Friday night in the first round of the Dixie Youth 9-10 AAA District 2B Tournament. But some late-inning heroics resulted in an 11-10 victory in the double-elimination tourney.

After taking leads of 8-5 and 10-8, Shelbyville saw Pineland battle from behind to tie the score. But the Dragons didn't fall behind and scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth frame when Sawyer Hendricks sliced a single in short-left field to drive in Braden Scarborough for the winning run.

The win will push Shelbyville to the winners' side of the bracket to match the Dragons up against Center on Saturday at 9 a.m. here at Center Noon Lions Park. Center had a first-round bye on Friday.

Other scores from Friday included: Tyler County blanking San Augustine, 17-0, and Hemphill outlasting Joaquin, 9-2.

In addition to the game between Shelbyville (1-0) and Center (0-0) Saturday morning, San Augustine (0-1) will take on Joaquin (0-1) in an early elimination game at 9 a.m. Tyler County (1-0) will battle Hemphill (1-0) at 11 a.m.

There will be a second session on Saturday evening. The loser of the Center/Shelbyville game will battle the loser of the Tyler County/Hemphill game in an elimination game at 4 p.m. Pineland (0-1) will tackle the winner of the San Augustine/Joaquin morning contest at 6 p.m., while the winner of the Tyler County/Hemphill face-off will take on the winner of the Center/Shelbyville morning matchup at 8 p.m.

Action in the district tourney will continue through Monday.

After Shelbyville took an 8-5 lead, Pineland scored three runs in the top of the fifth to knot the score at 8-8.

In the bottom of the frame Jorge Hernandez crossed the plate for the Dragons with two outs to put the Shelbyville All-Stars on top 9-8. He had stolen third and the throw came in wide of the bag, allowing Hernandez to sprint home.

Kolby Parker then reached base and stole third and scored on a wild pitch to give the Dragons a much-needed two-run cushion, 10-8, at the end of the fifth inning.

Pineland then pushed a pair of runs across in the top of the sixth to forge a 10-10 tie and put the pressure back on the Dragons. But despite allowing the Tigers to come back, Shelbyville's defense held its ground to keep the tie.

Scarborough then walked in the bottom of the sixth and moved to second on a passed ball. He stole third and then sprinted home when Hendricks hit a single to just over the outstretched glove of the Pineland shortstop, securing the winning run.
