Youth softball opens Saturday; Baseball rolling

With spring in the air, that means baseball and softball diamonds are filled with players having fun and friends and family members are out supporting them. The Center Youth Baseball league opened last weekend and is in full swing. The Center ASA Softball League will hold its opening ceremonies this weekend, and the Shelbyville opening day is set for next Saturday, April 10.

Opening ceremonies for the 2010 Center ASA Softball League are scheduled for Saturday, April 3, at the Old Community Park where the teams play the majority of their games. The ceremonial first pitch will be thrown out at 10 a.m., with a large number of games scheduled throughout the day.

Games in the 6-and Under Division on Saturday include the Diamond Divas taking on the Angels at 11 a.m., the Red Hots facing the Knockouts at 12-noon and Joaquin facing Shelbyville at 1 p.m. All three games will be played on Jones Field.

In the 8-and-Under Division, the No Limits will face the diamond Divas at 11 a.m., followed by the Shelbyville Black against the Pink Panthers at 12:20 p.m. Those games will be played on Shepherd Field.

The 10-and-Under Division games will include the Twisters taking on the Ball Hawgs at 1:45 p.m., followed by Shelbyville facing the Storm at 3 p.m. These games will also be played on Shepherd Field.

There will be one 12-and-Under game, which will feature the Starz against the Underdogs at 12:30 p.m. The 14-and-Under Division games include the Lightning against the Full Throttle at 11 a.m. and Joaquin taking on Shelbyville at 1:45 p.m. All of these games will be played on Field 3.

Center Youth Baseball
Teams in the Center Youth Baseball League are in full swing this week. There are some tight races in the league.

In the 7-8 Year Old Division, the Cubs hold a one-game lead in the standings with a perfect 3-0 mark, while the Mariners (2-1) are one game back, the Phillies (1-1) trail by 1.5 games, the Yankees (0-1) are two games off the pace and the Cardinals are still looking for their first win as well at 0-3.

Results this week include the Cubs outlasting the Phillies, 11-10, the Mariners outlasting the Cardinals, 12-2, the Mariners stopping the Yankees, 6-0, and the Cubs clipping the Cardinals, 6-4.

In the 9-10 Year Old Division, the White Sox and the Pirates are tied for first place with identical 2-0 records, while the Yankees and Royals are two games back at 0-2.

Results from this week had the White Sox clipping the Royals, 5-4, and the Pirates stopping the Yankees.

In the 11-12 Year Old Division, the Red Sox and the Diamondbacks are both 2-0 and tied for the top spot, while the Twins and the Astros are two games back at 0-2.

Results from this week include the Red Sox outscoring the Astros, 11-9, and the Diamondbacks stopping the Twins, 10-4.
